The American naval war during the American Revolution wasn‘t fought by a navy (excluding the French Navy), but by privateers who saw profit in securing a percentage of the cargo of any British ship taken. This book details the story of those privateers, their successes and the failures. An interesting book. Signed copy.

Purchased a #BlindDateWithABook today!
What nautical book will it be?!

Ruthiella My guess is it will be an Aubrey Maturin book by Patrick O‘Brian. 8mo

This was a fast read for me - full of adventure! I read this originally because it was on Obamas summer book list.

Most people probably wouldn‘t squeal in delight while browsing the medical history section of the used bookstore. But this book about scurvy will fit perfectly into what my husband refers to as my #DiseaseOfTheMonthBookClub. 😄

What can I say? I‘m a weirdo. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Suet624 That‘s wonderful. I have a friend who is an epidemiologist and she sounds just like you. (edited) 9mo
dabbe A wonderful weirdo! 💙🖤🩵 Scurvy was a BIG thing in the book I just finished, THE WAGER. Yikes! 🙀 9mo
TEArificbooks My hubby works in medicine, so he loves nonfiction medical books like this one. I recommend 9mo

“The power of fate is a wonder; dark, terrible wonder. Neither wealth nor armies, towered walls nor ships, Black hulls lashed by the salt, can save us from that force.” —Sophocles

A good secondhand find. I was interested in reading about the Pacific part of WW2 and particularly the naval part of it. The narrative frame, that the commander is telling his story to an interviewer for some reason, feels unnecessary; the first-person narration is vivid on its own.

Yup, loving this misadventure story

squirrelbrain I have this reserved on BorrowBox and it‘ll come to me mid-June I think - it‘s (digital) print though, not audio. Do you think I need audio? 11mo
eraderneely @squirrelbrain I like to always have an audiobook to hand for doing jobs and going on walks and this has been very good on audio. But I think it would be great in (digital) print too. 11mo
eraderneely So if you‘re looking for an audiobook, yes, do it. But if you just want to read it, either way will work. 11mo
