My IRL book group chose this one and all agreed it‘s harrowing and bleak. The author is from our hometown and some group members have connections to her family. If you love a memoir where the MC starts out privileged but bottoms out, then this is for you. Despite that, Blakinger has focus and drive amidst the chaos and is now an advocate for the (current or formerly) incarcerated.

Sheffield is a rock journalist with backstage access to this rock legend. And he‘s also got a (practically) lifelong adoration of Stevie‘s music and style. So this is his chance to delve into how she started, what Fleetwood Mac was really like, and what she‘s doing in her (gasp!) 70s. Hint: she still wears boots and top hats on stage!

Oh my, this is a rough read. But every word is important. We need to understand how militia groups are empowered and growing. This explains some history, but also more immediate info of concern, like how people are radicalized. It‘s very timely considering the Jan 6th Committee Hearings happening now. Highly recommend, but full of scary stuff.

Wonderful in concept, but lacking in execution. Ida B. Wells-Barnett is an icon for a reason. Sadly, this book about her fell flat for me. It was light on content, confusing in structure, and cluttered with many other people‘s stories. Left me wanting more Ida!

This is a tough book. The author began researching after the Affordable Care Act passed, and the premise about that section is 💯 more relevant in Covid times. Plus there‘s a section about pro-gun laws and suicide (TW for this) that is brutal. The section about taxes and schools punched me in the gut too.

Marc Petitjean separates fact from family legend in his biography about Kahlo and his father. He explores the veracity of the family stories about his father‘s affair with Kahlo in 1939. She gave the elder Petitjean, Michel, a painting she titled The Heart as a parting gift. It‘s also part pre-WWII history and art history.

Raw, brazen, vulnerable. This is both memoir and research paper into the world of open relationships and other non-monogamous constructs. It‘s also a primer from the inside of a relationship built on gaslighting. Parts are uncomfortable as hell to read. It illuminates ⬇️

This was a soft pick for me. I didn‘t learn anything strictly new, which was disappointing. But Montell made some very interesting connections about language and when ritualistic language is and isn‘t being used coercively.

Excellent book about the Hmong (pronounced MUNG), their history and emigration to the US after the Vietnam War. Also about one Hmong family‘s experience with the US medical system. And why medically related cultural sensitivity and accommodation makes a huge difference for everyone involved. Maddening but inspiring.
