The Girl Who Died: A Novel | Ragnar Jonasson
post image

Enjoying this dark mystery taking place in Iceland. It‘s about a teacher named Una starting over in a little remote town where the villagers are unfriendly and nothing is as it seems. Una starts having nightmares of a little girl in a little white dress. I will leave you with this cliffhanger… lol #ragnarjonasson #icelandmystery #icelandicthriller

Cold, dark, stormy and atmospheric The Girl Who Died is a quiet little ghost story with an unusual mystery mixed in. Strong characters and set in a town with ten residents, read this on a rainy day!

Read this for my book club. It was alright but it was a slow burn and took quite awhile for the murder mystery part of it.

🤦🏽‍♀️This book STILL isn't in the Litsy database. I had to share Ragnar Jonasson's update if you can't wait for the print copy release on Nov 1, 2017 (per Book Depository)

❄️Get excited Nordic Noir and Ari Thor fans!!!!

Cathythoughts I am excited 😊😉🎉 7y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts Yay!! I'm also pretty stoked this one is set around Christmas too. Snowblind was set around Christmas and that was one of my favorites in the series. 7y

*passes out* with an audible thunk.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

All my drama aside, I'm pretty stoked about his new release this year. And that he liked my excited comment over it. 🎉

Litsy needs to add it as a selection!

ScorpioBookDreams I love this series ❄️❄️ 7y
batsy So I'm guessing this is a recommendation for this series? 😉 7y
Jess_Read_This @ScorpioBookDreams Me too! He's such a terrific author. 7y

Jess_Read_This @batsy Oh, just a mild sort of a recommendation... 😆But he's a great author. His sleuth, Ari Thor, has many layers and is quite introspective. Jonasson also has translated Agatha Christie novels into Icelandic and I'm guessing there is that influence as well. 7y
batsy @Jess_Read_This You've convinced me! 😀 Ticks all the boxes: introspective, Christie-esque, and based on where its set, sounds atmospheric. 7y
Jess_Read_This @batsy Snow Blind is the book that really hooked me. For the English translations that is first book. I think for the Icelandic ones the books are in a different order. He's a bit different than Christie, but has all the player characters involved in the story in a similar fashion. So I think she has influenced him. Yes, it's quite atmospheric. The descriptions of Iceland are stunning, haunting, and play into the moods of the chapters. (edited) 7y
batsy @Jess_Read_This Ack! Now I want to drop everything to read it. Thank you, it sounds like my kind of thriller! 7y
Jess_Read_This @batsy I hope you like it! I always get a tad nervous when I rave about an author/book to someone and then think "Gosh, what if they don't like it and now think I'm such a weirdo!" ? 7y
batsy @Jess_Read_This I know what you mean! I always try to play down my recommendations when I get too excited 😂 7y

elliemcc11 Oh there's a few I can recommend 😀 8y
Jess_Read_This @elliemcc11 Send the recommendations my way!!! I've just ordered the rest of his series from Book Depository. The first has been the only one printed here. 8y
elliemcc11 Yes I noticed the two British newspapers mentioned on the front cover! 8y
Cathythoughts Yes, love Ragnar Jonnason. He takes his inspiration from Agatha Christy , the Icelandic setting & his town isolated by snowfall is great. Waiting patiently for his next release 8y
Jess_Read_This @Cathythoughts Me too! I think the next one that will be translated into English comes out in October! I've been thinking that he must practically be a Christie expert since he has spent quite some time translating her books into Icelandic. 8y

Ari Thor is shaping up to be a new bookcrush candidate. I'm about 70 pages in. Jonasson's storytelling ability is outstanding. He's slowly building the plot and introducing the characters with a deliberate intent. I am loving it. ❄️

elliemcc11 I got this pre-publication and never quite managed to finish it...not sure why though. 8y
Jess_Read_This @elliemcc11 I just finished it and really enjoyed it! I'm already looking into getting the second one! 8y
elliemcc11 Maybe I wasn't in a reading mood...I just can't remember now 🤔 8y

Jess_Read_This @elliemcc11 I've had those moods! I found this one to be very character driven and the plot moved along in the background. Which is completely opposite of a lot of crime fiction I've read before. 8y
elliemcc11 I usually love Scandinavian crime novels as well! 8y
Jess_Read_This @elliemcc11 This one was my first! Have you read Sarah Blaedel? I saw he had one of her books posted on his IG page 8y
elliemcc11 I haven't as yet but have one waiting in the wings. I think she's Danish. 8y
Jess_Read_This @elliemcc11 Let me know if you get to it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on her books! I'm hoping I can find a copy at the library here. 8y
elliemcc11 I'll see if I can find it in my shelves and will post a pic. I've read quite a few Scandinavian so happy to recommend. Some are easy reads and usually have good characters to get into. 8y
