A low pick for me. Loved the Icelandic setting but still warming up (in the chilly locale!) to the characters. I definitely liked it enough to try the next in the series.

The first in the Dark Iceland series, I enjoyed this one. It‘s a little slow to start with but it starts to pick up pace a quarter or so of the way in. I liked the setting and the character of Ari Thor, the policeman. There was a real sense of isolation and it was well plotted. A few twists and turns which kept me turning the pages.

I thought this was pretty good. Loved the description of Iceland.

Thrillers, mysteries, crime novels - really not my thing. I didn‘t find this creepy or suspenseful in particular, and I disliked the deliberate and obvious withholding of information from the reader (as in “He asked the question and she answered” instead of actually writing said question/answer). It was…fine…though a lot went unresolved. I liked the Iceland setting (one of my favorite trips ever and I need to return). #52Books23 #NordicNoir

Yesterday‘s library #BookHaul - or the day before, or possibly both. I have absolutely no concept of what day it is right now. Yesterday I said to the dental hygienist at my appointment that the day before I was convinced it was actually Thursday, and she said something about it being Monday. This did not alleviate my confusion in any way. So anyway, I got these books from the library…recently.

Loved this Nordic noir mystery. Set in a small community In Iceland, lots of great characters and it‘s a series, so I have already moved on to book #2!

I love the bleakness of snow storms and their aftermaths as a setting for mysteries/thrillers. This one was wonderful ❄️🌨️❄️

I wasn't quite as hooked as I was with The Darkness, but the small town setting with the claustrophobic snowy mountain backdrop really added to the sinister feeling. I could see this series really picking up and liked the mc! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am so ashamed to say this, but Bk1 of July is finally done! It‘s taken me 14 days to actually read a book from start to finish & I‘m frustrated by the huge stack that‘s sitting unfinished. This was a great Icelandic thriller set in Siglufjörõur, a small town on the north coast. Ari Thór accepts his first posting after academy only the quiet town he‘s expecting has the questionable death of a famous author followed by the attack on a nurse. 4⭐️?

#bookspin done… I‘m not a massive fan of a mystery that the reader is unable to solve due to not being given all the facts! I will read the next one on the series though to see if things improve as I nipped the setting…

Really enjoyed this thriller. A quick read and I love reading about the characters and I‘m looking forward to the next book in the series 🤗📖

Switching up to something new… well new to me 🤗📖🤨

I seem to spend winter reading books that take place in the cold. This series, which takes place in an isolated town in Northern Iceland begins with this mystery, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Looking forward to the next in the series. Photo is of the actual town, which I would now love to visit!

I really enjoyed this slow burning crime story. Set in a small snowed in town in Iceland, it perfectly describes the bleak midwinter. The atmospheric setting makes you feel you are there and can almost feel the cold surrounding you. Iceland is one of my favourite places and I love Nordic noir drama. This book doesn‘t disappoint. There are many intertwined characters who gradually come together within the story. Can‘t wait to read the next one.

1. I like snow better the next day! When the sky is deep blue and the snow glitters in the sun, before it gets all dirty and gross.
2. Usually I like to walk around and look at the snow, but this year with my leg still healing from surgery that‘s not such a good idea.

We ended up getting ~ 6 or 7 inches yesterday…

What I was picturing as I read this thriller set in the northern part of Iceland. Quite interesting, in how it was presented. A bit slow at first but I enjoyed the second half much better. Nice characters and a complex enough plot to surprise.

44 of 2021. This book is set in a small village in Iceland. Great descriptions of the snow and cold make it very atmospheric. A new cop is assigned to this village where everyone knows each other and he is the outsider. I enjoyed the characters. Good start to a new series that I definitely will continue reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An interesting beginning to a series. I like crime stories that don't necessarily end all wrapped up with a bow. Ari Thór is a new policeman who gets a job in the town on the edge of northern Iceland. A town where everyone knows each other and outsiders are still called that after living there for years. The manager of the playhouse accidentally falls down steps and dies, and the leading man's wife is found in the snow almost dead. ⬇️

Wonderful characters, a very human detective newly assigned to a fishing village in far north of Iceland,vivid description s of blinding snow storms, make this a 5 star whodunit for me.

Great nordic crime novel set in a small town in Iceland near the Arctic. Great descriptions of snow and cold and the claustrophobic feeling of being cut off. Multiple mysteries and I liked the way they were woven together. Still in a mood for crime at the moment, since my last report two weeks ago, I have read The Night Stalker and the first three books in Ragnar Jónasson‘s Dark Iceland series, which I am really enjoying. Currently almost at the end of the fourth in the series, one more and then a 5-month wait till the final book in the series is released! Also about a third of the way through Black Water Lilies.

This was atmospheric (the town is pretty much a character, I love when that happens) with a slower pace than most thrillers but it works well. We're given plenty of time to know our main character and the other players in this particular drama and to be invested in solving the crimes. I'm interested in Ari Thor's future so I'll check my library for the other books in the series.

This is a decent thriller set in a desolate town in the northern part of #Iceland. Of course it‘s winter, heavy snowfall secludes the town even more from the rest of the country. The young policeman Ari Thor has just moved to the town when all action starts.

My new stack of reading. Excited! ❤️📚

I‘m kind of thinking Nordic Noir is not for me, though I wasn‘t a big fan of the main character, Ari Thor. In a desolate town, closed off from the outside world due to the weather, secrets come to light, and death lurks in the shadows. Ari is a new recruit for the police force; as an outsider, he‘s having a hard time adjusting to his new surrounding. Yet, he seems pettish and petulant and makes some pretty bad choices. So-so for #WhoDunItTheSequel

Ragnar Jónasson‘s debut Nordic Noir crime thriller (translated into English by Quentin Bates and the first in a series) makes full use of its atmospheric location to create a sense of choking claustrophobia but the plot meanders and I found myself bored by the emotionally immature Ari Thór and his girlfriend woes, especially as Ari Thór‘s investigation is driven more by happenstance by evidence, such that I am unlikely to check out the sequel.

Read this for my book club. It was alright but it was a slow burn and took quite awhile for the murder mystery part of it.

A little bit of sunshine peaking through on this cold winter day.

Started this one today during the ice storm.

While I really enjoyed the setting of this book, as well as the Icelandic pronunciations on the audio, the book itself was just ok. The main character had some traits I found infuriating and the author did something I hate in mysteries—hid information from the reader that the investigator has. I won‘t be continuing with this series.
