I‘m going to power through the rest of my September reviews before I sleep in prep for the big readathon tomorrow.🎉

I was skeptical about this one for years (golly the reviews are SO polarized), but I fell decidedly to the pick side. Heartbreaking while also heartwarming, Oskar‘s story of grief and healing is compelling, and the writing and narrative choices really worked for me.

Glad I chose for #RelatedTo911 prompt for #Booked2021.

This is told from the perspective of a teenage girl writing to her baby sister who died on 9/11 – not in the terrorist attacks, but after being hit by a car. Among other things, it's a story about family dynamics and how we deal with grief. Unfortunately, I just didn't really connect with the protagonist; while it wasn't a bad book, I wasn't that enthusiastic about it.

This #audiobook is a comprehensive look at the failure of the Afghanistan War. Particularly timely now. The most sensible thing I read was someone that said we should‘ve paid for a generation of students to go to school in India, then let them run their own country. I think that would‘ve been a lot more effective than the nation building the US did try to do.

Megabooks @Cinfhen true. I definitely see the point I paraphrased in my review that if we had focused on meeting Afghans where they were at rather than funneling money and trying to make it America, perhaps we would‘ve been more successful at lasting change. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage I think that point is incredibly wise. While agree that finding bin Laden and eliminating his terror network was important, I think pretty much everything else we did there was misguided and short sighted. Education—especially of girls—might‘ve made a huge difference. 3y

Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage a lot of the quotes in this book from all levels of the military as well as some civilians are from a project called “Lessons Learned”. I hope we did learn lessons from this. Some of the Pakistani people said they were hedging their bets by staying on the Taliban‘s good side. Just an incredibly f***ed up situation that cost a lot of lives. 3y

If you want to dive into the details of this tragic days, definitely consider this as an audiobook. It is more moving than any other book I‘ve listened to. Ever. The heroism will inspire you. But be prepared for all the feels, though.

Also interesting in light of current events, from Afghanistan to the pandemic. Made me think!

I think we all know exactly where we were and what we were doing when we learned about the attack of 9/11. I remember being in total shock. But I don‘t think I fully grasped the magnitude of that event until I read (or in this case, listened to) this book. I ugly cried. Many many times. It‘s heartbreaking, inspirational and so humbling. I cannot recommend this enough.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

MallenNC I listened to a webinar with the author today and found out he‘s just released a podcast on 9/11 which goes into more depth on the ripple effects of the attacks. MallenNC @BarbaraTheBibliophage He said the webinar answers more questions that he couldn‘t do in the book since it was an oral history of the day. The first episode was hard to listen to, but so well done. It talks about how some much of what happened that day was due to a failure of imagination. No one thought the buildings could collapse.
