In the Time of the Butterflies
In the Time of the Butterflies | Julia Alvarez
It is November 25, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful, convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. El Caribe, the official newspaper, reports their deaths as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Raphael Leonidas Trujillo's dictatorship. It doesn't have to. Everyone knows of Las Mariposas - "The Butterflies." Now, three decades later, Julia Alvarez, also a daughter of the Dominican Republic and long haunted by these sisters, immerses us in a tangled and dangerous moment in Hispanic Caribbean history to tell their story in the only way it can truly be understood - through fiction. In this brilliantly characterized novel, the voices of all four sisters - Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Dede - speak across the decades, to tell their own stories - from hair ribbons to gunrunning to prison torture - and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo's rule. The Butterflies were extraordinary women. Minerva, once the object of the dictator's desire, had dared to publicly slap his face. Devout Patria found her calling to the uprising through the church. Alluring - and vain - Maria Teresa joined in pursuit of romance. Only Dede, the practical one, the most diligent in her duty to family and tradition, kept apart. And only she survived to see that their names were remembered. Now, through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez's imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again. And Dede joins them as a heroine of equal courage.

February's best book is a fictionalized account of the Mirabal sisters, who were kicking ass & taking names, so to speak, during the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. I listened to the audiobook, and it did a great job of giving each sister her own voice.

Holy flicks. This book was so so so good. It‘s historical fiction based on the Mirabal sisters. OMG such an incredible story. I had to read it for school and the first couple chapters were iffy. But then it gets CRAZY GOOD. I recommend translating any Spanish. The characters were realistic and the shifting povs and perspectives really enhanced the storyline. According to the outside research, it‘s fairly accurate. 8.5/10

#readingtheamericas2023 #DominicanRepublic Fictionalized account of four sisters who tell their story of growing up under Trujillo‘s ruthless dictatorship. The tale begins with the one surviving sister reflecting back on their relationship with their parents and each other. The pace quickens when they speak of their husbands, their fears, their children, surviving in prison and standing up for freedom. “The Butterflies” still evoke 👇

Currey passions. The day of their murder is honored as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. (edited) 12mo

I first heard about the Mirabal sisters when I read Brazen a few years ago and I knew that I wanted to know more. Dying research for #foodandlit #DominicanRebublic I came across this book, and knew that I had to read. All about the butterflies, the sisters, Patria, Dede, Minerva and Mate. Four sisters who joined in on the fight against the dictator Trujillo. To be honest I had some trouble getting into the story, but at the same time I wanted to

AnneCecilie read on. This is a fiction book so the author has taken some liberties. It says in the postscript that November 25, the day of 3 of the sisters murder, has been declared the International Day Against Violence Against Women in their honor 14mo

This is an amazing heartfelt, daring family saga. Las Mariposas (The Butterflies) are 4 sisters in the Dominican who are revolutionaries fighting against the Trujillo regime. Based off a true story, and artfully told this book taught me a lot about DR history while the story sucked me in from page one. These sisters were amazing, and Alvarez's writing is fantastic

Four women beautifully narrate the chapters told by each of the Mirabal sisters during dictator Trujillo‘s reign in the #DominicanRepublic. This is their tragic story from the author‘s admittedly very fictionalized version of a true event. It successfully portrays Trujillo‘s lust for young beautiful girls and brutality, and the rebellions and the hope for a better future. Highly recommended. #foodandlit #readingtheAmericas

This book would be perfect for a buddy-read or a book club. What I love is how seamlessly the author narrates each sister‘s story. Even the minor characters have memorable cameos. Also, I felt that there was a streak of indulgence for the bad guys.
This is one of those books that says so much in just one sentence. An example: Until the nail is hit, it doesn‘t believe in the hammer. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

marleed I read this in early 2021 and it‘s definitely stayed with me. My IRL bookclub allowed each member to submit 3 books for 2022 consideration. This was one my recommendations, but sadly was not chosen. But you and I know the mistake they made! 2y
BiblioLitten @marleed Oh definitely! What doesn‘t it have… history, politics, relationships, culture. I appreciate the editing because this book could also have dragged on for a bit. Do you have a favourite character? (edited) 2y
marleed @BiblioLitten Oh I never thought about it, maybe Minerva because there was so much to her story. I can‘t imagine being the first woman to graduate law school in DR only to have the certificate immediately stripped from you for rejecting the advances of an a**hat. 2y

Love this book about the Mirabal sisters who resisted dictator Trujillo‘s regime and were eventually executed in 1960 in the Dominican Republic. Written in diverse voices and styles, it paints a vivid picture of the impact of the grinding oppression and strength and courage taken to overthrow it. Especially interesting as I visited the DR women‘s centre in 1992 and got a shirt with the sisters on it that I wore to shreds.

How did I not know this story. The conversation is fictional but the history and Mirabal family is real. International Day Toward Violence Against Women (Nov 25) was established in the memory of the three siblings assassinated by henchmen for the Dominican Republic dictator, Trujillo. Anger over their death led to Trujillo‘s death and end of regime just 6 months later. ...I‘m so grateful I read books and learn things.

Historical fiction depicting the lives of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic during the reign of Trujillo. Critical to the resistance against the regime. Their story is moving and tragic. A fictional account of the Mirabals, victims of the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic (see authors note) It‘s written from each sister‘s POV, chronicling the journey from daughters to wives & then ‘politicos‘. Alvarez brings the epoch to life through a personal lens - girlhood, faith, marriage & motherhood, the personal interactions of prison time & house arrest, the small details make this a heartfelt read rather than a history. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Centique Note: Alvarez‘ family was forced to flee the Dominican Republic when she was 10 after her father participated in a failed coup. 6y
