Fall and Rise
Fall and Rise: The Story of 9/11 | MItchell Zuckoff
Years in the making, this spellbinding, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting narrative is an unforgettable portrait of 9/11. This is a 9/11 book like no other. Masterfully weaving together multiple strands of the events in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Fall and Rise is a mesmerizing, minute-by-minute account of that terrible day. In the days and months after 9/11, Mitchell Zuckoff, then a reporter for the Boston Globe, wrote about the attacks, the victims, and their families. After further years of meticulous reporting, Zuckoff has filled Fall and Rise with voices of the lost and the saved. The result is an utterly gripping book, filled with intimate stories of people most affected by the events of that sunny Tuesday in September: an out-of-work actor stuck in an elevator in the North Tower of the World Trade Center; the heroes aboard Flight 93 deciding to take action; a veteran trapped in the inferno in the Pentagon; the fire chief among the first on the scene in sleepy Shanksville; a team of firefighters racing to save an injured woman and themselves; and the men, women, and children flying across country to see loved ones or for work who suddenly faced terrorists bent on murder. Fall and Rise will open new avenues of understanding for everyone who thinks they know the story of 9/11, bringing to lifeand in some cases, bringing back to lifethe extraordinary ordinary people who experienced the worst day in modern American history. Destined to be a classic, Fall and Rise will move, shock, inspire, and fill hearts with love and admiration for the human spirit as it triumphs in the face of horrifying events.

A remarkably coherent account of what happened on 9/11, grounded by the stories of people who survived and those who died. A must-read.

You know the phrase, “it‘s not you, it‘s me”? I‘ve never had this before with a book, but on today‘s anniversary of 9/11, I have decided to put this book back on my shelves. Don‘t get me wrong, this book is very good, and is incredibly well-written. However, I‘ve always had a hard time reading non-fiction books and I‘ve spent the past year trying to read this with no avail. I will try this one again one day as its history is so important.

This is so good, and so difficult to read. It tells the stories of several people involved in the events of 9/11: plane passengers, pilots, first responders, people trapped in buildings. It's told roughly in the order of before, during & after the attacks. So many tragedies & so many miracles. #nonfiction #history #911

I am very meticulous and demanding with my star ratings. A book has to be very special to earn a 5-star rating from me. Some years I don‘t give out any 5-star ratings. This year I had three. These are the ones that met my high standards this year.

arubabookwoman I was wondering about The Only Plane in the Sky-whether it would be worthwhile to read after Fall and Rise. I think I will look for it to read if it is as good as Fall and Rise. 4y
Amiable @arubabookwoman They are equally good, just written in different ways. One (as you know) is oral narratives pieced together in chronological order. The other is straight narrative nonfiction. They pair off each other perfectly. 4y

I‘m always happy when my current 3x3 grid contains a 5* read, and the tagged is a beautiful document of that tragic day. This year on Goodreads I rounded my 4.75 (Solid A) up to a 5, as well.

5* = Loved It, want non-reader IRL friends to read. I do/will own a physical copy. A+
4*= I liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Average C
2*=Nope D

britt_brooke Fall and Rise was one of my favorite reads last year. It‘s difficult to describe it. 💔 4y
marleed @britt_brooke I agree. I can‘t quite find the words to describe something so difficult to revisit. But I‘m so grateful the history is documented for those who never lived through it - and for the families who continue to live through it everyday. 4y
britt_brooke @marleed Agree. It really humanized the horrific day, if that makes sense? For someone like me, with no direct connection, it feels necessary to at least try to understand. But, god, it was a difficult read. 4y

My August reading total came out to 14 books. Pictured is a sampling of this month‘s reading. Not my best but better than I expected, with the start of school and all that it involves.

With September starting, I‘m looking forward to cozy reading as the weather cools. 🍁

Reviewsbylola Also, technically I didn‘t finish The Space Between Worlds. That was a hard bail, because I was so into it initially. What a letdown. 4y
MicheleinPhilly 12-14 is my usual pace and I‘ve finally gotten back to that. I was looking through my numbers today and it was pretty telling. I read 2 books in March and had a normal pace in April. Then I only read 3-4 books during May and June. July and August have been “normal” in terms of numbers but I‘m also leaning heavily into easy, detective series reads. 4y

Holy crap! I am speechless! As a 9 year old living in NYC during this horrifying day, I‘ve dedicated my life to remembering it! Enlisting in the Marine Corps at 17, before graduating HS, and leaving for boot camp 16 days after graduation, I continued that dedication through today. This book is unlike any other I‘ve read about 9/11. Painful, heartbreaking, but absolutely beautifully written and personal! HIGHLY recommend! #WeWillNeverForget

I guess it is a good thing that I live in a city where people don‘t look strangely at you if you are walking around with tears in your eyes but I really need to pick a lighter audiobook soon. This was every bit as incredible as you have all been saying, a 5 ⭐️ read for sure, but man was it brutal. I was expecting it but it still took my breathe away all the same.

keithmalek I'm a New Yorker, so I don't even want to try to read this. However, I have managed to read two related books that I want to recommend here. One is about the intelligence failures that lead up to 9/11(why that's somehow easier for me to deal with I don't understand) called The Watchdogs Didn‘t Bark. The other book is "Grand Illusion" by Wayne Barrett, which is about Giuliani's negligence to protect the WTC between the '93 bombing and 9/11. 5y

Ugh. I held it together for 445 pages. Then I hit this passage. While attempting to rescue victims in the WTC on 9/11, FDNY Captain Jay Jonas was trapped for several hours in Stairway B when the North Tower came down. After being freed, he then had to WALK many blocks back to his fire station because the collapse had crushed his firetruck. This is what happened as he trudged through Chinatown.

And suddenly... a flood of tears. 😢

ljuliel Isn‘t it hard , when something that traumatic happens, and someone shows such kindness ? It just breaks down your last bit of resolve to hold yourself together. This book should win some type of award , if it hasn‘t ... 5y
Amiable @ljuliel I was trying to be detached as I was reading but this just punched me in the heart. On a day that was the most horrible Capt. Jonas has ever experienced, this simple act of kindness was like a light shining through the evil. (edited) 5y
ljuliel That‘s the only good thing to come out of such a horrible event. You saw so many acts of bravery, kindness, and really good people. Thankfully, the number of good people in the world far outweigh the number of evil. 5y

Thank you Mitchell Zuckoff and Harper Collins audio for presenting the most comprehensive yet compassionate account of 9/11. Many times throughout the audio I was brought to tears. This is hailed as the definitive account of 9/11. Every other book I‘ve read about 9/11 has a pretty narrow focus, understandably. This one spends 500 pages laying out everything from that day, and picks various people as the lens through which to tell the story. I love narrative nonfiction, and this is a perfect example of how it can be used to write such a monumental history in an accessible, humanistic way.

keithmalek I'm a New Yorker, and a few years ago, I worked with a kid who was reading a book about 9/11. I asked him how old he was at the time, and he told me he was 7. I was 22. He shook his head so hard and fast I thought it was going to fall off. 6y
