“... and a sound arose of endless interchanging melodies woven in harmony that passed beyond hearing into the depths and into the heights, and the places of the dwelling of Ilúvatar were filled to overflowing, and the music and the echo of the music went out into the Void, and it was not void.”

"Tolkien read the whole of "The Lord of the Rings" to the Inklings in chapters as it was written but Lewis recalled, "We listened to his work, but could affect it only by encouragement. He has only two reactions to criticism: either he begins the whole work over again from the beginning or else takes no notice at all.""

DivineDiana I did not realize that he also is responsible for the illustrations! 6y
Bookwomble @DivineDiana Tolkien was a fantastic artist, not so good with human(oid) figures, but excellent with landscapes and design. Hammond and Scull have written a number of books devoted to Tolkien the artist, of which the tagged book is one 😊 6y

A rare breakfast in bed! Veggie bacon and cheese sandwich, strong tea, Tolkien and Chet Baker on the stereo ☺

I can't believe l've found this at a reasonable price. True, it's a bit battered, but it's intact.
Loving it!

I'm a wee bit late, but I'm finished! I was fascinated by the mythology, even if narratively this wasn't my favorite. Onto The Children of Húrin next! And yes, I have a lot of catching up to do 🙄

BarbaraJean You can do it! 👍🏼 Love this illustration! 7y
InLibrisVeritas Glad you enjoyed it! It's definitely a dense narrative. Hurin moves much quicker and some of the chapters are super short. 7y
gossamerchild @InLibrisVeritas good to know! @BarbaraJean thanks for the encouragement! 😊 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great job! And great picture! Now that you‘ve finished The Silmarillion, at least you know what‘s coming in the expanded story of Hurin 7y

Just a smattering of illustrations found throughout my edition of this book (probably not what's tagged, but I couldn't find an exact match). Didn't realize I had gotten so far behind on the #LOTRchapteraday, but getting much reading done today 😁. I think chapter 14 had been my least favorite. The place names just do not stick.

Ugh, the cropping 😡. I love the illustrations in this edition, and particularly like this one, highlighting the beginning of the sun and the moon, and more specifically, the awesomeness of twilight 🤩

JazzFeathers There are so many incredible illustrations, especially fir the Silmarillion. I really like this one too 😍 7y

Aulë offers to destroy his creations (dwarves) for displeasing Ilúvatar. That's kinda #dark 😯
