Pickpick

Tookie was locked away for a crime she didn‘t commit, and in prison she developed a love of reading. A friend gets her a job a Louise‘s fictionalized bookstore when she gets out. A regular customer dies and begins haunting the store. The pandemic hits, and life at the bookstore changes. I LOVED the characters in the book but some plot points didn‘t make sense to me, which got me lost in the middle. I can see why Louise is so beloved. #ToBplayin ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ I strongly disliked Future Home when I read it for the BOTM challenge, so I had been reluctant to read her again, but I‘m really glad the ToB pushed me to read this. (edited) 3y
Ruthiella The first book I read from her was The Roundhouse, which was good but bleak. I‘m glad I went on to read more because I loved 3y
squirrelbrain Looking forward to this one, but it‘s not published yet over here. @Ruthiella - I have The Night Watchman on Kindle but heard mixed reviews…I‘m sure I‘ll get to it soon! 3y

Tamra 👍🏾👏🏾I am loving the characterizations! Audio is great with Erdrich narrating. 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella I have TNW on my radar now that I enjoyed this! 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I‘m excited to read your thoughts once you‘re able to read it! 3y
Megabooks @Tamra I am not a fan of her narration. I tried and bailed earlier this month, but I‘m glad I went back and read it in print. 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Tamra @Megabooks I‘m glad you tried again! Sometimes the format makes all the difference. 3y
charl08 Waiting for this one from the library: it is only just coming out here! 3y
Megabooks @charl08 enjoy!! 3y
Chelsea.Poole @Ruthiella I‘m with you, the first one I read was The Roundhouse and haven‘t been eager to read another. But maybe I‘ll try the one you mentioned. Thanks! 3y
BarbaraBB This review convinces me to read it! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think it will be a pick for you…the question is how strong?? 🤔 3y
Suet624 Have you ever read this one? It was my first and I read it years ago. I had a book hangover for a very long time. 3y

Copeland Cane is on the run and shares his confession of how he became a fugitive. He faced incarceration for a minor crime as a teen before being “discovered” by a white businessman and given a full scholarship to a private school. In the background of this near-future book is the pandemic, still disproportionately killing BIPOC people, and the BLM movement. I was fully invested in Copeland‘s story and loved the #audiobook narration! #ToBplayin

Ruthiella Glad this one was a winner for you! I agree that the audio book narration was excellent. 3y
squirrelbrain I really liked this one too… it felt fresh and very realistic. 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella I didn‘t know what to think going in, but I‘m glad I read it!! 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain 💯 agree on fresh and realistic! 3y

Well, I‘ve finished the #PandemicFiction #ToBplayin round, and here are my thoughts. I haven‘t written reviews of Copeland Cane or The Sentence yet, but hopefully will later today. I read Friends the week it came out in case you‘re dying to read my review. 😉😂

Just two more left for me the Ozeki and Klara! #ToBshortlist

Cinfhen Wow!!! Great progress 🥰I haven‘t read Copeland yet but I definitely don‘t think Friends should be there and I‘d be ok with the Erdrich, too. 3y
Suet624 You‘re amazing. 3y
Ruthiella I lost my hold on Our Friends and Neighbors 😭 so have to wait for it again. Hoping to get my hands on the Erdrich soon and like @Cinfhen , I think that‘ll be my pick for the play in round. 3y
BarbaraBB Such great progress. I haven‘t read one of them yet. I am hoping to get to the Erdrich too soon. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @Suet624 @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB thank you all! My goal is to finish them all in 2021, but I‘m waiting for Klara at the library. I‘m 75 pages into the Ozeki and surprised to be enjoying it. The Sentence didn‘t get my full vote because it lost me a bit in the middle whereas I was engaged with Cane all the way through. Both are definitely picks, though. Interested to see what all of you think as you move through the list (and the judges)! 3y

I bailed on two, and HEAVILY skimmed my IRL bookclub book, One Night Markovitch 😖( horrible, choice) and I sort of read, lightly skimmed the two #ToBPlayIn choices; The Sentence & Country Friends. I liked the other 3 with the winner being When We Cease To Understand The World (#ToB22ShortList)
To all who are celebrating today, Merry Christmas ♥️To all others, I hope you‘re having a lovely weekend.

Crazeedi Peace and love sent your way Cindy!💚❤ 3y
Cinfhen Thank you so much @Crazeedi Right back at ya 😘😘And best wishes for health and happiness in the coming new year 💞💞💞 3y
kspenmoll Have a wonderful New Year! I got The Sentence for Christmas so I shall see… 3y
Centique Arohanui from NZ to you my lovely friend 💕 3y
Megabooks I‘m listening to this right now! If it‘s not good, idk who I‘ll root for in the play-in!! 3y

Frosty cold here (below freezing), but I got an early morning Amazon package! Here are the last three from the #ToBshortlist and #ToBplayin. I‘m reading them all this year, including the play-in, so I have this + two audiobooks left. Let the Christmas reading binge begin! 🎄

I also have two reviews coming today, including the final one from my #AlgorithmExperiment. 🤔

squirrelbrain I just got the Ozeki on Libby, waiting on the Erdrich to appear in a library, Libby or Scribd (somewhere, anywhere!) 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain the ozeki is definitely the chunkster this year! I‘m hoping to tackle it this weekend. 👍🏻 excited to read your review. I bailed on the Erdrich on audio, but I‘m really enjoying it in print! 3y
Cinfhen Fun!!! I love early morning delivery from Amazon💕💕💕enjoy xxx 3y

Megabooks @Cinfhen it was so nice to have it already there when I took molly on her first walk. I know the postal service must be overworked, though! 3y
BarbaraBB Nice haul! I‘m not sure I will get to the Ozeki. I am curious to hear what you‘ll think. 3y
squirrelbrain I could get the Erdrich on Audible but I have a feeling it will read better in print. My library has copies ‘on order‘ but they never tell you when they‘re coming in. 3y
Ruthiella Nice haul! I currently have Nervous System out from the library. Hope to get to it next week! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I was on the fence about it too, but I decided to go big, especially since I had a gift card. 👍🏻 3y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I bailed on the audiobook so print/ebook is definitely the way to go. I found the narration terrible!! 3y
Megabooks @Ruthiella I‘m starting with the sentence but nervous system was very tempting! 3y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - me, too. (Nervous System) Picked it up yesterday but haven‘t had much time. Just started Several People are Typing on audio. (edited) 3y
Megabooks @BkClubCare I loved Typing on audio. Really funny book. 3y

A book about books, sure…check out this list; but it‘s also about ghosts, family, community and oh, the pandemic 😷 “These are the books that knock you sideways in around 200 pages. Between the covers there exists a complete world. Reading one of these books takes only an hour or two but leaves a lifetime imprint.” #ToBPlayIn

RaeLovesToRead 👀 Screenshotted... also going to check out the tagged book! 😊 3y
BarbaraBB So you are loving it? 3y
Cinfhen I‘m enjoying it and I‘d be happy if this book makes its way into the final spot @barbarabb 3y

BarbaraBB Happy to hear that. Most books so far have mixed reviews 3y
TrishB Sounds really interesting 👍🏻 3y
Megabooks This arrives today! 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen I think it‘s going to work well for you in print @Megabooks 🙏🏼 3y
Cinfhen This was a library borrow and that worked well for me, if it becomes a kindle deal I‘d definitely recommend picking it up @TrishB there is a 5 page list at the end of book recommendations from the author which is pretty awesome 🤩 3y
Cinfhen The list this year has a lot of similarities @BarbaraBB this had some elements from The Trees / the discussions should be very interesting 3y

#LibraryHold came in this morning 🙌🏻Perfect timing - I know my book bestie wasn‘t able to get into this one, but I‘ve read 15% and I‘m totally feeling it! #ToBPlayIn

slategreyskies Those flowers are so lovely!! 🥰 3y

BarbaraBB This will be my first book by this author. Looking forward to it! 3y
sarahbarnes The hold line I‘m in at the library for this one is SO LONG. 3y
Cinfhen I‘m SO surprised how quickly I came off the holds list @sarahbarnes and I‘m REALLY liking it!!! 3y
Cinfhen I think you DID read a book by her @BarbaraBB 3y
Cinfhen Thanks @julesG apparently they are indigenous to this region and they only bloom once a year. They come in a variety of colors❤️🧡💛💜 3y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t realize she wrote that, but you are right!! I enjoyed that one a lot. And your memory is amazing 😻 3y
Megabooks I need to read this in print. I just hated the narration. I‘m loving 3y
Cinfhen It‘s SO WEIRD what I remember @BarbaraBB I‘m glad you‘re loving Trees @Megabooks I thought it went a little too slapstick (I don‘t love satire) towards the middle but it definitely leaves an impression. He‘s an author to watch. And the Jeffers is excellent but it takes concentration and I needed the print in the beginning to help guide me. I liked the narration once I was able to follow the story threads. 3y
Cinfhen Oh I‘m commenting on the wrong book… 😛 @Megabooks YESSS!! Try this in print!!! I think you‘d like it better that way. 🤓 3y
