Book 6 for #TenBeforeTheEnd and another one I‘ve had on my shelf for at least a decade. It was interesting and a creative merging of two timelines and some magical realism, but I didn‘t love it. I realized this is by the author of a new book, which I do still want to read - The Most.

Listening to tagged book and enjoying some Christmas ambiance before work this morning. Anyone know if there‘s a #holidaycardswap this year? I signed up for a lovely winter themed one, but I really enjoyed the Christmas one I did last year. Litsy is my cozy holiday home.

PuddleJumper @LitsyEvents is keeping track of things happening. I think that's a winter card swap 1mo

Loved this book, a mix of oral histories from migrants and the memories of those who worked on the island.

"The British gave the most trouble..."

Karisa Just toured the immigration detention center at Angel Island where Asian immigrants were kept typically for 2-3 months but European immigrants 1-2 days. Poetry, mostly in Chinese, is carved on almost every wall from detainees. 1mo
AlaMich @Karisa I went on a few school field trips to Angel Island (many, many years ago) and I don‘t think we were even told about its history. I just learned about the carvings from reading your post and doing a little googling. It‘s fascinating. 1mo
charl08 @Karisa @alamich you might like this book. Lots of voices of "ordinary people" 1mo
quietlycuriouskate Ugh, British entitlement syndrome (I'm British)! This paragraph strikes kind of ironic now, though, since "we" put paid to our freedom of movement in Europe with that bloody Brexit vote. 1mo
charl08 @quietlycuriouskate I thought also of the attempts to control "our" borders: "we" can travel everywhere, but "the other" can't come here... 1mo

.... they both look down on the crowd....

[H.G. Wells asks] "You don't think they'll swamp you?" I said. "Now look here," said the Commissioner, "I'm English-born Derbyshire. I came into America when I was a lad. I had fifteen dollars. And here I am! Well, do you expect me, now I'm here, to shut the door on any other poor chaps who want a start with hope in it, in the New World?

They‘re certainly pushing this novel of a 1920s divorcee. It was in the thriller section in WH Smiths. However, the blurb made it sound like something else. In both seller and buyer, confusion reigns but I thought maybe it was an edgy, impossible to categorise, rediscovered curio plus I have a soft spot for women behaving badly stories so I took a punt. Sadly I can‘t get past the first 30 pages. It‘s American Psycho without the murders or irony

Very interesting insight male/female relationships in 1920s New York - found myself a little irritated by the characters but it‘s an era thing ! Overall I enjoyed it .

As usual, I devoured this book. It‘s a heartbreaking read. Slaughter is a gifted thriller writer and this latest installment in the Will Trent series is just as compulsively readable, horrifying, and gut-wrenching as the others. Faith‘s description of the case is perfect, but potentially spoiler-y, so I‘ll put it in the comments under a spoiler tag.

This is the 12th book in the Will Trent series, which is a sequel to the 6 books in the Grant County series. I have read most of them and they are all really very good. They are dark, often graphic, but filled with great characters. This one involves a majorly dysfunctional family that run a resort where Will and Sara are staying. Naturally there is a murder. Thank you to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. I could not put it down. 4.5/5 stars!
