Currently reading…
💪🏼 There have been some really good excerpts in Women‘s Lives so I‘m adding more authors like Janet Frame to the wishlist, & moving Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard to the top of my stack.

📕 Here‘s another Phyllis Rose shelfie from when we rented her house 2 summers ago. I recently read the Annie Dillard excerpt and wonder if this is the actual copy of An American Childhood she referenced when editing it? 🤩

Ruthiella That‘s so neat that you saw (and took pictures of!) her bookshelves. I loved her books “The Shelf” and 1w
slategreyskies There‘s also a movie about Janet Frame directed by Jane Campion. The movie is called An Angel at My Table. If you decide to read Janet Frame, you may find the movie to be worth searching out as well. 1w
PaperbackPirate I have Parallel Lives waiting to be read on my shelf, and also want to read The Shelf! Good to know you liked them @Ruthiella ! I found her on Instagram too and it looks like she has an interesting life. 1w
PaperbackPirate That‘s what I read an excerpt of @slategreyskies ! I will definitely be checking out the movie too then. Thanks for the tip! 1w

Pickpick

This was interesting Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman admitted to medical school in the states, her sister Emily followed a few years later. Emily had a harder time being taken seriously and being able to complete her degree. They focused on women‘s health not totally by choice. They opened what would become the first women‘s hospital in NYC.
They had their flaws.
I could used more, not sure what more just more.
Worth the read and time.

If you‘ve followed me for long you know I love a strong, badass woman and the (white) woman admitted to medical school would fall into that category. The fact that the male students agreed to admit her as a joke and then she was a damned good student and earned the respect of her fellow students and instructors, perfect.
I‘ll probably finish this tomorrow.

LoverOfLearning Sounds like a read me and my bookclub would so enjoy! 2w

Today (Feb 11) is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. All the girls and women who want to pursue a career in science should be free to do so.

ncsufoxes My 9 year old daughter wants to be an astronaut. We keep encouraging her to follow her dreams (she‘s been wanting to be an astronaut since she was 4). Her dad is a scientist & he is a strong supporter of women being in science (he‘s always had women bosses & both the people that work in his lab are women). 3w
Dilara @ncsufoxes That's great! I hope she makes it 😁 3w
Butterfinger @ncsufoxes my eldest graduates from State this spring in geology. I'm proud of my Wolfpack girl choosing a field in science. With the geological event that happened in western NC, the career possibilities are endless. 3w
ncsufoxes @Butterfinger congrats & go pack! My daughter wants to go to State. My husband & I both went to State for undergrad (& he did his PhD at Carolina in Genetics & Molecular Biology). My oldest is a junior at the University of Rhode Island. He‘s studying Wildlife Biology & Conservation. He‘s a little concerned about the future but more determined than ever to protect the environment. We‘re going to continue to need scientists, more now than ever 3w

#25Alive!

A little #Laughter quote from the amazing Maya Angelou.

"My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return." ???

I got the tagged book for Christmas (my sister is awesome) and used some of my Christmas gift card on the other three (my dad is also awesome). I‘ve been waiting forever to get this Riordan but now I have to wait on the new Percy books to come out in paperback 😢 and I decided to bite the bullet on Bride. I‘ve liked everything else I‘ve read by AH (which is everything but Check & Mate, which I‘m currently reading) so we‘ll see. #bookhaul

A fascinating work exploring the queens of Medieval England from Matilda of Flanders through to Elizabeth of York.

Very interesting! Dense, and I would have appreciated it more dipping in and out instead of reading it straight through. The best part though is the conclusion which examines the historical queens through the fictional lenses of Beowulf and Mallory‘s Arthurian saga. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
