Good for purpose searching!!
I‘ve wanted to read this ever since reading Into Thin Air years ago. It‘s an interesting story- Chris was not much older than I am, and I knew people who held a moral compass *somewhat* similar to his… but should never actually go to the lengths he did. It seems a small mistake might have been his undoing, but I really don‘t know how he would have lived if he had survived.

So excited!
Faina, a surprise arrival in the snow, didn‘t capture my attention like she did her adopters (and perhaps creators) Jack and Mabel. Faina‘s mere presence, a kind of miracle in their lonely lives, is the event but the somewhat blank girl doesn‘t do much beyond showing up—and as we humans often can‘t resist—leaving. Most of the characters in the book take a hike, to discover who they are and can be.
My #bookspin this month was a historical fiction about the exploration of the Wolverine River through Alaska, the first successful trip by white men.
While the exploration part was interesting, I preferred the other part of the story is about Sophie, the wife of the lead explorer. She is left behind near Seattle, and finds a new interest in photography of birds and nature, in the days when the art of photography was new.
I can see WHY people liked this…I just was not one of them. I‘m too literal of a person to really get into a book with a bear/man as a character, 😆 BUT, it did make me miss the mountains! (27)
Star: 3/5
I fell in love with this novel. It was a beautiful story of love, grief, adventure, family and joy. Set in the harsh conditions of Alaska, the descriptions of the seasons the wilds of mountains, rivers, and farming in the early 1920s were remarkably wonderful. The main characters Jack & Mabel, Faina, George, Esther and Garrett are perfect for this tale. The book was hard to put down. 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Stayed up til 2:00am to finish! This is my first Kristin Hannah novel and it didn‘t disappoint. A story of many types of survival. When my alarm goes off for work….I‘m going to be hurting.
I listened to this book on flights to and from Alaska, and it was the perfect complement to my trip.
