Robinson would probably make it on my top 5 list of favorite poets—if I were to ever make one. He wrote metered poetry and sonnets in a time when they were going out of style. But as far as poets go, he has the most attuned sense to time and meter and rhyme I have ever read.

Also… what is happening up in Maine? Robinson was from there, and we all know another famous Maine writer, and just like his work, some of these poems are quite dark.

Anyone who knows anything about The Scarlet Letter can guess how Hawthorne felt about Puritan society, so...This won't be a surprise. The takeaway, for me, is that sometimes the truth does not set you free. Sometimes the truth becomes a burden. Also, who we are and the face we show the world may not always match up. Young Goodman Brown, for some reason, is meeting up with the Devil. He gets more than he bargains for...

batsy Ooh, intriguing! And I've somehow made it this far without reading Hawthorne 😅 This is probably a good one to start with... 2y
AshleyHoss820 @batsy Honestly, yes! I found him much more palatable in short story form! He has a writing style that is…WORDY, to put it mildly. 😂 (Joseph Conrad and William Faulkner are similar) I hated The Scarlet Letter, but I was more prepared for his style when I read The House of the Seven Gables. I ended up really enjoying that one. ☺️ (edited) 2y
batsy @AshleyHoss820 OK, thank you! I'll know to start off gently with this and The House of the Seven Gables to follow, before I attempt The Scarlet Letter (if I ever do 😆) 2y
AshleyHoss820 @batsy Absolutely! I think, if I had been prepared, I would‘ve enjoyed The Scarlet Letter. I know there are a lot of people who do. I look forward to your thoughts on this! 2y

On our drive home from the casino, my husband (the English instructor) was shocked that I had never read this story. So, we found it on Libby and #AudioCommute listened to it. I really enjoyed this. It was a nice mix of creepy and suspenseful. Also having moved to New England in the past year, I am glad to read/listen to local authors :)

I also love and adore my F. Scott Fitzgerald collection. About 105 books so far. Lots of first editions. These make me happy. Sorry the picture isn‘t more clear. #fitzgerald #fscottfitzgerald #classics #oldbooks
