BoleyBooks @tpixie I have had it on the shelf a while...decided it was time. I was expecting it to be a very dark story, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the narrative. We humans are a bunch of strange specimens, and seen through the eyes of a child even more so. 😊 3y

MamaMastracci @BoleyBooks Yes, I have! I loved it too. The first time I read it when it was released and I thought it was sad. Then I heard Frank McCourt read some of it and he was laughing about it... all of his troubles in the past. It gave me a new perspective. I read it again with his laughter in mind and thinking- of course all of this happens to Frank. I loved them both. There is a third, Teacher Man. It‘s more about his later life. 3y

GingerAntics @readinginthedark it‘s okay. I‘ve read it twice before, I recently reread it for fun, and I think @faibka and I are going to read it together since it‘s both of our favourite. Another trip around in a while with the whole group would be cool, though. I always seem to find something new with Hamlet every time I read it. 5y

🤣😂🤣 I‘m so sorry, this isn‘t funny unless you‘ve been Catholic and had to go through this ritual. I want to go in and out of a confessional now just so I can say it‘s been one minute since my last confession. Should be a nice shock since the first go around it‘ll take be “it‘s been 20 years since my last confession.” 🤣😂🤣

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl eh, I‘m pretty sure “sin” is some BS made up to make certain people feel self righteous and look down on everyone else. Everybody does bad stuff and everybody does good stuff. As long as you‘re more good than bad I think you‘re doing just fine. 5y

Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics oh I agree and it can be a very narrow way of defining morality. I just know that in some eyes I would be considered a sinner and quite frankly I‘m ok with it. 5y

Next up is this lovely memoir. I‘ve wanted to read it for about 20 years (I can‘t believe it‘s been that long). I recently found out this guy lived in the same part of Ireland my family is originally from, so I now have an even greater interest in it. So, here goes nothing.

The only thing I remember about it is that I took it with me to read after standardised testing my freshman year of high school (we were allowed a pencil and a book to read after). I think the stress of ridiculous, pointless testing probably kept me from really being able to read it or much else. I‘m excited to finally give it another try. No idea what‘s taken so long. 5y

JazzFeathers I had the Great opportunity to attend a presentation of McCourt's book at a book fair many years ago. He was such an awesome storyteller. Listening to him was a joy. 5y

GingerAntics @JazzFeathers that‘s the same thing Jeannette Walls said in her introduction. She said to read this book is to hear him speak. I‘m a little half done with this book, and I would gladly sit and listen to him speak all day. Add in a charming Irish accent and my day is complete. I don‘t have a very good Irish accent in my head. I need to work on that. More Father Ted for me!!! 5y

Mindyrecycles HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. McCourt reads it and he sings all the songs. Amazing! Sequels are great also. 5y
