Grendel | John Gardner
post image
Pickpick

Having taught BEOWULF for a number of years to my sophomore honors, why didn't I have them read this, too? This book is not simply a retelling of BEOWULF from the monster's point of view; it is highly intellectual and philosophical as Grendel seeks to find some sort of meaning to his life. Drawn to and repulsed by humans, he reminds me of Frankenstein's creature, who also seeks the purpose to his existence. ⬇️

dabbe Several philosophies are explored here, most of which I can't wait to look into. The trope of reading a story from the supposed villain's point of view is not new, but it is absolutely heart-wrenching here. I dare anyone who reads this not to be touched by Grendel's utter isolation and loneliness. What a read.

Cuilin I read Beowulf with a group of middle schoolers years ago. I enjoyed it but never thought I‘d read it or anything connected with it until now. I‘m intrigued. 2mo
dabbe @Cuilin I will be interested to see what you think. The writing was gorgeous and ghastly as only an intellectual monster's thoughts would be, I guess. But so profound. For me, a whoah book. 💜🩶💜 2mo

@MidnightBookGirl 🌚
This guy, what a creep! It's basically a narcissistic murderer blaming his victims and braggingabout how he got away with it.. It made me so angry.🤬 The only reason I don't feel terrible for even reading it is because the proceeds went to the Goldman family.

LibrarianRyan Have u heard the theory that it was actually his son and that is why the gloves didn‘t fit? I heard it recently and it was interesting. 3y
Tera66 @LibrarianRyan No, I hadn't heard that😳😮. The whole thing is crazy, looking back the whole circus of it all.🎪 3y
bookaholic1 @LibrarianRyan I heard that as well, very interesting 3y
MidnightBookGirl I recently got the audiobook for the same reason- to support the Goldman family. Haven't actually read it yet though. 3y
Tera66 @MidnightBookGirl I did this on audio too, I'm glad it supported the Goldman family, but looking back I regret listening to it. It's pretty much a smear campaign against Nicole. A lot of "see why she deserved it?" 3y

Arlo and the Great Big Cover-Up | Betsy Childs Howard

I liked this book until they started talking about sin and God. Arlo has drawn on his wall with a marker. He does get punished with no “screen time”. The story should have ended with Arlo‘s mom helping to clean things up. Instead it goes into a lecture on sin and trying to hide our sin from god. NO THANK YOU. On a side note, the characters in this book are Black, but the author is not. The race of the illustrator is unknown.

Catherine_Willoughby Kids Books shouldn't be pushing any religious agenda - they can incorporate faith to show kindness or acceptance among other faiths . Sounds like this kids book has an hard core religious agenda - maybe towards african audience? FROM my personal experience most Christian Africans or those of African heritage are very religious. Some have pushed their faith towards me . 4y
Catherine_Willoughby I am an atheist but have incorporated my children into my mothers faith as that was her wish (my nan was very religious. Her own mother lived among the Local ministers) 4y
Catherine_Willoughby I do not drill religion into them but they are exposed to my mothers church through attends with my dad (who goes still after my mothers death. Its not his orginal faith) and go to a faith seconday school. Our family has a deep link with our local church but I no longer attend church but do have an interest in the historical aspects of our faith in non fiction & fiction 4y
LibrarianRyan @Catherine_Willoughby I was raised with church and many of my family are die hard Lutheran. I‘m questioning. My problem with god in books is that you can not use them in a public library story time. Maybe some libraries can but most I have worked at can not. Most religious picture book are obvious. If I had paid attention to the publisher I would have caught it. This one was good until it got preachy. If it had cut off the end it would be 5 ⭐️ 4y
DAB This conversation had me curious as bout this book. 4y

ljuliel If you‘re interested in this story and a bit more about how this book came out, there‘s a really good podcast by Kim Goldman , called Confronting OJ Simpson. Very good. You learn a lot of “ behind the scenes “ stuff that went on before, during and after the trial. 4y
arlenefinnigan @ljuliel ooh that does sound interesting, will check it out. 4y

It reminded me of hearing a little kid say they weren't totally wrong in hurting a friend because, after all, that friend called them a bad name first, so they aren't a bad kid, just misunderstood... Really, if it had just been the text of the book by O.J. I might have not even finished it.
