#booksandvinyl this album has zombie on it which is a type of monster so good enough for me.
This isn‘t a straight up biography, we get the author talking about her search for information for Millicent and her reaction to the things she finds out.
I found this a brilliant thing to do as she is giving me the fully interactive experience of why I read biographies of women like this. Continues in comments

Weaponxgirl As a kid if I heard about a strong independent woman doing her own thing I wanted to know more. I looked up to these people, they gave me a role model outside of the norm. Let me know it is possible to be different and I related them to my own life. This is exactly what the author has done with Millicent. She lets you know from the start what a inspiration she was to her as a woman working in horror movies 6y
Weaponxgirl She talks about the sexism that Millicent faced and how it is all too familiar to her today. This might make it not a book for everyone since I know some people want their biographies strictly to the point about the person and don‘t want the authors opinions but I personally loved this take. 6y
Weaponxgirl She talks about moments where she was disappointed in Millicent as she was once of the only people she had to look up to when younger but then Examines these thoughts and what it means to her. A really unique book about a really unique and wonderful woman. I‘d highly recommend 6y

SW-T I‘ve been wanting to read this since I first heard about it. May have to move it up my TBR! 6y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T it was one of the holds that suddenly came in from the library that threw off my reading last month but I‘m glad it did. I forgot to say just how funny and snarky the author is too. I did laugh out loud a few times too. 6y
TieDyeDude My favorite book I've read/listened to this year! She narrates it herself 5y
Weaponxgirl @TieDyeDude I bet this was great on audio. It‘s definitely been a highlight so far. 5y

#booksandvinyl this book takes place over summer and I felt summertime sadness was a good choice for this book.
This is my kind of fiction, it‘s mostly internal so not for someone hugely plot driven but the characters are just so wonderfully drawn. Not always likeable but that‘s how people are. There are wonderful parts in this that just drag you back into remembering that the main protagonist is a child. #mccullersbuddyread

Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz how did you find this?. I realised when I nearly finished that the atmosphere felt like a muggy summer day all the way through. That pressure on top that makes you tired and cranky. I feel like McCullers is just a author I can rave about all day as the more I think about this book the more I notice. Feelings I had, the artistry of how she hardly told me anything in a lot of ways but conveyed everything. 6y
arubabookwoman I thought the book was amazing in how accurately it conveyed what it felt like to be a 13 year old girl. 6y
Weaponxgirl @arubabookwoman yes! There were so many moments that perfectly portrayed someone trying to act like a grownup and then doing something that just showed how they weren‘t as mature as they were trying to be. 6y
See All 7 Comments
ephemeralwaltz Yes Shirley! Your comparison to a long sluggish summer day is spot-on. I just finished reading the forward by Ali Smith (included in this same edition) and oh boy, the more I think about it the more I realize how brilliant this book actually is. She conveys a lot with so little.
6y
ephemeralwaltz The third part of this was so interesting. I feel like the author gave us so much to think about in part 2 and then suddenly, in part 3 we have to accept that F. Jasmine's fantasies were just that, fantasies, and she relegates back to “Frances“ status (a sign of coming of age?). Plus, what is up with John Henry's passing? My heart broke in two. If that isn't the most blatant statement about the fragility of the world, then I don't know what is. 6y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz omg I was so upset! It was like that part of her childhood literally died as she then got a new friend and was excited about moving. I found her reaction really interesting, it was that distance from reality that is still quite childlike. That ability to just move forward and not completely understand what you have lost. Like her relationship with Berenice, leaving the things that have propped you up for so long. 6y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz and how she seemed so confused about them Berenice saying she didn‘t understand why he had to suffer so 😭. 6y

#booksandvinyl it‘s mentioned her listening to patsy cline and the title three cigarettes in a ashtray seemed to fit.
This is the best kind of biography, when the author obviously loves who they are writing about but also isn‘t afraid to show their flaws.
Marie‘s life was amazing as was her outlook on why she reported. Whilst she was competitive about getting the story she always wanted to centre the everyday people who were caught up in war in

Weaponxgirl Her journalism. This gave her writing real heart. 6y
Weaponxgirl I found the last chapter when she was in Syria really hard to read as you know what‘s coming. If you are like me and cry at the end of biographies then This one will be particularly gut punchy. 6y
Weaponxgirl But it was an amazing read and i think that even people who don‘t normally enjoy biographies would probably enjoy reading this one too. Hell one of her assignments is enough for a book on its own for most people. 6y

RvnclawWhovian @Moony I‘m glad it spoke to you! 6y
RvnclawWhovian @Weaponxgirl with the exception of a handful, they‘re all my dad‘s old records. It‘s probably one of my favorite things in my house. I‘ll have to figure out a way to incorporate them into a book review picture sometime soon! 6y
Weaponxgirl @RvnclawWhovian I sometimes do my #booksandvinyl reviews when I think a album matched a books content. But what I‘m reading always affects what I fancy doing in my life at large 6y
RvnclawWhovian @Weaponxgirl what a cool idea! There‘s definitely a couple books on my TBR that would be perfect for something like that 6y
Scochrane26 I have a tin mug that has that saying on it. 6y

The World's Wife: Poems | Carol Ann Duffy

#booksandvinyl there‘s a great part in the Kray sisters poem where they lean on Sinatra to sing in their club and of course it‘s Nancy not frank.
This collection is wonderful, fairytales, myths, feminist and snarky.
This is one I‘m going to have to buy myself, I love it that much and it‘s a great start to poetry month.

Leftcoastzen Great album cover! Nancy looks fierce! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Leftcoastzen it a album I forget I own periodically and then when I remember it again it gets played nonstop for days. My poor neighbours 6y
TrishB Great description 👍🏻 one of my fav collections too! 6y

Weaponxgirl @TrishB any other faves in this sort of vein? I‘m hooked now! 6y
TrishB Have you read any other Duffy? Rapture is amazing, as is Sincerity. 6y
Weaponxgirl @TrishB not yet but this collection has put it high on my to do list. I‘ll look for those ones in my library first 😊 6y

Riot Days | Maria Alyokhina

Riot! The last pussy riot book I read had me respecting these women a lot, this memoir somehow sent my respect levels up higher than I knew they could go.
Imagine having a 4 year old and being told if you admit your guilt then you will most likely get put under house arrest and still be able to be with him. Then imagine that you believe so much in what you stood up against that you say no. Cont in comments

Weaponxgirl Then imagine that when you are sent to a penal colony that you don‘t just put your head down and get the sentence over with, that instead you use the worldwide platform you have to fight for basic human rights inside. Not just for yourself but for all the other prisoners too.....and win! 6y
Weaponxgirl This is written in a down key way. When she is talking about something horrific it‘s hits because of how matter of fact it‘s told to us. I personally found this touching. I can‘t say enough how much I admire her strength and integrity. This is bound to end up a cult classic and should be read by almost anyone. 6y
Weaponxgirl Try #booksandvinyl choice is le Tigre as pussy riot were inspired by the riot grrrl movement of which Kathleen hanna is a founding member and the fact that in the last pussy riot book I read they had messages from this band supporting them when they were going to trial. 6y
SW-T These women are so inspiring 😊 6y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T I think I could read about them all year! 6y

In some books the writing cuts like a knife, this isn‘t one. This book is a series of small paper cuts that you finally notice and realise it hurts but you can‘t quite remember when it happened or how. There is so much underneath these stories bubbling away. The people feel real and it‘s not all darkness but when it hits an emotional nerve it strums it. A character danced to billie holiday in one story so that‘s my #booksandvinyl choice.

Stephaniereads1 I love Billie Holiday. Im adding this. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Stephaniereads1 she is a classic for a reason! I hope you enjoy the book too. 6y
Leftcoastzen I need to get to this book,it sounds so good. (edited) 6y

Weaponxgirl @Leftcoastzen it‘s quite small and quick. Just my kind of book, as with any collection some stories are better than others but quite a few moments just snuck up on me with the feelings. 6y
Weaponxgirl Forgot to say was part of #readblackwomen 6y
BibliOphelia Great review! 6y
Weaponxgirl @BibliOphelia thankyou 😊 6y
Stephaniereads1 Im excited to read. 6y
CarolynM I started reading this a while ago. I enjoyed the first couple of stories and then got side tracked. Must get back to it. 6y

Yea, I have a problem. Several actually and should probably stop reading books about music as I just get all inspired. I‘m going to listen to the dissect podcast that has a series on this album as recommended by @GeekShique after I‘ve given this a good listen to. #booksandvinyl

Weaponxgirl The lighting in my flat is horrible for taking photos I know 6y

SW-T Great album 😊 And if books about music inspire you, read, listen, and enjoy! (edited) 6y
Ggggg yessss that's boss! you'll be such an expert on Lauryn Hill now 😁 enjoy the album and the podcast 6y
CBee @Weaponxgirl for sure! I‘m going to have to listen to it again soon, it‘s been too long 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Emilymdxn Amazing!!! Support this so hard 6y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T thanks 😊 my wallet is screaming at me but not my fault theirs so much amazing stuff out there. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GeekShique she is such an interesting person! Thanks for the recommendation again I‘m looking forward to it 😊 6y
Weaponxgirl @CBee for me too! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn reading is such an immersive experience for me. It will literally inspire everything else I‘m doing. Music, food, clothes I‘m a huge sponge and a geek. 6y
Emilymdxn What a wonderful way to be! I‘m similar, I fall down huge holes of needing to immerse myself in whatever I read about. I love to plan a holiday somewhere and vanish into books and food from that place in advance so I can be as hyped as possible and immersed in it when I go 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn that would be amazing! At the last book chat I ran a few of us were talking about how food is a gateway to another culture and how some cookbooks totally count as literature. 6y
Emilymdxn I adore food writing! I‘m a terrible cook so I read very few actual recipes, I‘m trying to read more, but I love books that are generally about food and our relationships with it. I suffered from q bad disordered eating a while ago and reading about food helped me build up a good relationship with it again, food writing is powerful stuff 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn that‘s amazing that helped. I taught myself to cook in my late teens and early twenties from books. The trick is to get books that don‘t just give you recipes as it‘s shocking how many are not well tested (never trust a book that tells you to cook an onion for 5min, it should tell you how it should be instead) I really like this book she also has a series on Netflix. Also Nigel slater is amazing! 6y
Emilymdxn I‘ve been really wanting that book!! I trust your recs a lot so I might include it in my next payday order. I adore everything Ruby Tandoh has ever written so much. It‘s amazing knowing exactly what goes into food, holding and appreciating and enjoying all the ingredients in your hands and smelling it cook. For my trip to Texas in a few months I want to try reading books from there while I can hear my food sizzling... 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn ruby tandoh is wonderful! It‘s learning how it should feel, look and smell that‘s the trick. After that you will get a good instinct for recipes and flavours that go together for you. And always have a frozen pizza available in case you mess up. We all do! I‘ve never been to Texas but I do love southern food cookbooks! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Emilymdxn I was thinking about food books on Texas (can‘t find many) but I thought you might like this one if it‘s not on your radar already. I haven‘t read it yet but I‘ve been meaning to for ages 6y
Weaponxgirl I also have this one and its and it‘s a nice one full of little snippets 6y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve seen this one but I haven‘t been able to get a look at as not in my library 6y

RebelGrrrl I adore that book, it was kind of a life changing book for me tbh! Also the music picks are A+ 🎶 ❤ 6y
Weaponxgirl @Bertha_Mason I know 😍 I‘ve been eyeing the vinyl for ages and this book just pushed me over the edge of must purchase. 6y
Weaponxgirl @SW-T I love their whole vibe 😁 6y
Weaponxgirl @RebelGrrrl I‘m loving this book and taking my time with it, then looking at how much it‘s gonna cost to improve my collection. The final goal is to have a collection of mostly women artists that I love and that is super varied. I want at least one record from all the artists mentioned eventually 6y

I saw some other littens reading this for #readingwomenchallenge2019 and #readblackwomen and I was inspired to pick this up as it has been on my radar a while. I don‘t normally read plays but I really enjoyed this.
The dialogue is wonderful and the different types of strong women portrayed and the emotions bubbling underneath was done so well. I also haven‘t done a #booksandvinyl for ages cont in comments

Weaponxgirl Nina Simone wrote young gifted and black about the author and I don‘t have that particular Nina song on vinyl but I have arethas version so you are getting two albums for the price of one and really that‘s not a bad thing at all. 6y
Weaponxgirl I now really want to see a stage adaptation of this play live. 6y
