Memorial Ride | Stephen Graham Jones

Mehso-so

A soldier returns home from war to bury his father, and gets on the bad side of a gang of bad guys, who hunt him down. This is a wildly inconsistent book. It alternates between riveting and incomprehensible. The black and white art can be dynamic or impossible to follow. The story is solid, if a little scatter shot, but people keep finding each other in the middle of nowhere with no explanation. It honestly feels like a first draft. #comicscount

TieDyeDude On the plus, it is a ridiculous revenge action comic with native artists dealing with native issues, and a plot straight out of 80's Hollywood. Nothing from SGJ is bad, this was just a little undercooked, IMO. 4w

Pickpick

An affable lowlife wakes up after a night of drinking to the sight of a man with a deer head driving a Jeep. He has no memory of the night before, and quickly gets caught up in the strange town. Is it a bad trip, or something real? #comicscount

A decent start to this series. A princess trapped in a tower befriends her dragon guardian and sets it to free other tower-bound royalty. Good idea, but the writing isn't blowing me away. About half of issue three was spent on the joke that most women's armor in fantasy is impractical, which could have been related in a couple pages. Not sure if I'll continue. #comicscount

Battling Boy | Paul Pope

Pickpick

Pope certainly has a very distinct style. It is occasionally off-putting, but generally works. A character similar to Marvel's Thor sends his son to a world in turmoil as a coming-of-age trial. That world's tech-based hero has just been defeated, and his daughter is looking to step into his shoes. Good first chapter #comicscount

I really enjoyed this exploration of navigating personal growth and toxic friendships through the lens of a bachelor party weekend and an apocalyptic cult. An excellent LGBT graphic novel with very fun, stylized art. #comicscount
