“ There‘s a society here of women who still think the name Hughes should be removed from Sylvia Plath‘s headstone—I‘m sure you‘ve heard about that, how they are always trying to etch it off the stone…

I had no clue about this very real controversy!

merelybookish I didn't know this but guess I'm not surprised. I know lots of Plath devotee LOATHE Ted Hughes. 2y
kspenmoll @merelybookish This had never occurred to me but I know about Ted Hughes reputation!!! 2y
DivineDiana I did not know of this. It‘s sad all around. 😞 (edited) 2y

The Ethics of Abortion | Jennifer A. Hurley

Mehso-so

★★★☆☆

Pro: I liked the format: a short anthology of writings by various authors examining the issue from different perspectives.

Cons: It was fairly binary and could have benefited from more examples of the messiness of morality. It was published in 2001 and often refers to events of its time so it's somewhat outdated now.

I have been reading this little by little but I honestly can not finish this. I‘m at the conclusion that I can not read war without being triggered badly.

A little heavier read to start tomorrow

CarolynM I remember all the controversy about this book and it's author. I'll be interested to see what you think of it. 3y
Darklunarose @CarolynM I‘ll have to try to get though it. I‘m hesitant, I don‘t do war, but it‘s one of the few stories set in the Ukraine the library has for my reading around the world challenge. 3y

I purchased this book for .25 at the #library and now that I research it I've never seen a book rated this low on #Goodreads

There's definitely #controversy about it.

Has anyone read this book before?

#BannedBooks

xicanti I read it long ago. It‘s terrible. The author‘s a very rich dude who self published it and gave hundreds of thousands of copies away for free through sites like BookCrossing, which is how I got it. Nobody knew what his deal was until after the books were distributed. 3y
sharread Thanks the reviews on Goodreads are so funny. 3y

Wings | Mikhail Alekseevich Kuzmin

Wings, an openly gay novel, was published in Russia in 1906. Obviously, there was some pushback at the time, but still... literary circles at the time must have been rather progressive. In fact, Anna Akhmatova mentions Mikhail Kuzmin several times in her poetry - they were friends -, which is how I came across him in the first place.

#Controversy

Scochrane26 I‘ve seen some comments about this book & am glad to know so I don‘t read it. 5y
rsteve388 I was so pissed when I read the article I posted. I sadly feel into the trap of wanting to read this book cause it was so widely advertised and was on a bunch of different "Must Read Lists" even Oprah's! 5y
rsteve388 Holy shit the story gets worse!!! The author got her nails done, like the cover of her book and... At her publishing party event she wrapped the center pieces in Barbed WIRE!!!! Ahhhhh how do you not know how wrong that is??? 5y
Skygoddess1 I first heard about this book, when my bookstore announced her eventual tour stop a couple months ago and said it would be a ticketed event. This was before the controversy of the story came out, so not knowing who this woman was or even what the story was about as to why my local indie felt the need to pre-sell tickets to her signing, I read the synopsis. After reading the synopsis, I said a hard no and pass! Since the controversy, same answer 5y
