One of my closest friends gave me a beautiful hard back copy of In The Beginning by Virginia Hamilton. I love folklore and this book is gorgeous. I loaned it to another friend just before her apartment building caught fire. Her entire family had to jump from a second story window. I had to resist the urge to ask her if my book was okay. I had to get another copy. #sundayfunday @BookmarkTavern

BookmarkTavern What a gorgeous looking book! And such a scary experience for your friend! Thanks for posting! 10mo

And that's a bail! Some interesting stuff, but a lot of stuff so over my head that I was just reading words with no meaning.

But, yay, got a bingo! 😁

TheBookgeekFrau @Andrew65 Yes 😕 But I might go back to it; because what didn't go over my head was really quite interesting 13mo

I always wonder about pieces like this that are classified as nonfiction but are written from such an internal perspective. Writing in Nin‘s voice is pretty much always going to be a loosing battle. And while the broad strokes biographical details are there, the narrative constructed around them isn‘t really in line with my vision of Nin. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame Still, the colored pencil illustrations are incredibly evocative, and they tell a story that‘s completely in line with my vision of her. They‘re almost worth a pick all by themselves. 2y

A wonderful book for kids and grown ups which explains the meaning of the cross with simple language and expressive pictures. We love it and read it every year around Easter!

Gioconda Belli was recently stripped of her Nicaraguan citizenship along with 93 others. I don't think it was president Ortega's intention to remind me that this novel of hers was on my TBR, but it did, and now hopefully you can add it to yours and we can increase the readership of authors who resist their fascist governments. The novel is about Adam and Eve: Belli has fun showing us what a world without history looks like from their vantage.

Billypar If anyone doing the #ReadingtheAmericas2023 challenge still needs one from Nicaragua, I recommend giving this a try. 3y
Leftcoastzen Sounds amazing 3y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen Yeah, it's a pretty creative riff on one of the most famous stories ever. 3y

Currey @Billypar I have her autobiography on my TBR shelf. Thx for the prompt to get to it 3y
Billypar @Currey I'd like read that one - it sounds like she's lived an interesting life to say the least. I think The Inhabited Woman was inspired by her experiences with the revolution in Nicaragua. 3y
Suet624 All of this post is so informative! Ortega removing citizenships? This author? I have some reading to do. 3y
Billypar @Suet624 I didn't know much about denaturalization before I heard of this story. Pretty terrible practice! 3y
