The Lost Symbol | Dan Brown

I read the first two back-to-back which kinda burned me out, i think. I took a big break and am now starting the third one, however, I think it's just the author and how he writes this character. The trope already tells familiar and overplayed and I'm only 6 chapters in. I have Origin in the tbr as well, but it appears I'm missing Inferno.... I know his newest just came out-- unsure if I will bother

Pickpick

My 16 year old wanted to listen to an audiobook when we went to Ohio last month. We listened to it for about 2 hours & didn‘t get back to it, I of course had to finish it. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a Dan Brown book. I love the combination of different parts of history & art history (symbology was always my favorite part of art history). It was a decent listen but it is also a reminder of how far technology has come since this book was

ncsufoxes released & wouldn‘t be believable to younger people today (although there was a waitlist when I returned this audiobook). Still a fun listen, need to probably re-read Brown‘s books, someday. 2mo

Inferno: A Novel | Dan Brown

Boring. 😴 I almost DNF several times. This is a stroll through Renaissance art in Florence, Venice and the mixture of art and culture in Istanbul. All disguised as a rather slow chase of Robert Langdon by unknown pursuers. Brown even takes time to mention two ugly sculptures in the Boboli Gardens through which a lengthy portion of the chase ran. I love art and art history but yeah...Plus, a great deal about Dante and his Divine Comedy.

Caveat: I am NOT a literary snob.

Okay, I am a tincy-wincy bit of a literary snob. But Dan Brown is a hill I'm willing to die on. Yes, this is utter tosh at the final analysis. And yes, Brown's writing style can be screamingly irritating at times.

But oh boy, is this ever a fun read! You kinda know what you're gonna get, but I devoured this in 2 or 3 breathless gulps & knew for an instance pure entertainment. Utter tosh still, but whatever!

6 days out of 7, I eat healthily. Then, on the 7th, I treat myself to a dirty takeaway, full of fat & MSG, and I try to feel guilty, but I can't because it tasted SO good. This is similar to how I feel about ditching Literature (with a big L) and having me a little Dan Brown time. Sorry, not sorry.

I occasionally enjoy a good conspiracy theory and a mystery that mixes art, science, and religion seems like it should be a surefire hit. But I'd forgotten that I find DB's writing kind of annoying. This one was repetitive and choppy, yet still entertaining. But my biggest compliant was with our hero, Robert. For a scholar/ professor who has made a career out of learning and deciphering the meanings of symbols and ancient languages, he was

bookandbedandtea exceedingly cynical and condescending throughout the entire book. I don't think he had a single conversation where he didn't express disbelief about the ideas being presented to him. He even frequently told people their information/ concepts/ beliefs were flat out wrong simply because he'd never heard the ideas before. I wanted to slap him. 8mo
