Inferno
Inferno: A Novel | Dan Brown
In his international blockbusters The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown masterfully fused history, art, codes, and symbols. In this riveting new thriller, Brown returns to his element and has crafted his highest-stakes novel to date. In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of historys most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dantes Inferno. Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dantes dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered.

Best I can say for this month‘s #bookspin read is I cleared off a TBR book. It had been left behind by a family member after staying with me. My 2nd Dan Brown and just not impressed. It was like viewing a slideshow of my grandparents‘ European travels. Lots of cathedrals and artwork and little historical anecdotes. Great for a travelogue! But Brown adds a plot that wasn‘t very suspenseful and didn‘t hang together well. Adding a ⭐️ for Dante. 3/5

I picked this as an audiobook because it‘s the only Dan Brown book I haven‘t read yet. Little did I realize it involves issues with overpopulation and the problems with distribution of resources (that could end civilization) and a potential plague/pandemic that might devastate our future😳🥺. Hits close! Not my favorite Brown book but still lots of great art/science facts and enough action to keep you turning the pages! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

With the plot being focused on plagues, an over populated world and PCR tests I felt like I was reading this at the right time. I appreciated the content and discussions much more having lived through 2020.

Dan Brown is also fabulous at setting the scene, I could visualise every piece of architecture he described. In a way I feel like I've been on holiday!

An excellent read that totally engrossed me.

119 of 2020. This was the last book in this series for me to read. I read them out of order which normally drives me nuts, but it was fine in this case. Not my favorite of the series, but a good read nonetheless. ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

📖 > 🎥
The movie as a stand alone movie was pretty good. As an adaptation of the book, it‘s TOTAL GARBAGE!!! Two good characters were turned bad. Useless characters were added to the end. The ending was entirely changed. Basically, the book and the movie took a beginning and then did their own things from there. Half the suspense of the book was lost in the first minutes of the movie when they revealed who the “solders” are.

GingerAntics THE BOOK IS *WAY* BETTER. Compared to the rest of the movie series, this one diverged much more from the book and in ways that are far more important/detrimental to the plot. Of the three, this movie is by far the worst. I like the other two movies, but I probably won‘t be watching this one again. #DanBrown #RobertLangdonSeries #Inferno #thebookisbetter (edited) 4y

This book is amazingly poignant for this moment in time. No one purposely released COVID 19, but the discussion of viruses, the WHO, even apathy is just so perfect right now. Another great Robert Langdon story, great for escaping the madness of current events. This book made me want to read Dante the first time Around. Maybe this time I‘ll actually read it.
#DanBrown #RobertLangdonSeries #Inferno

GingerAntics @Graywacke you‘ve read Dante, haven‘t you? Did you read all three or just Inferno? 4y
Graywacke @GingerAntics One of my 2020 projects. I‘m still working through. Paradise is next. But definitely recommend. He‘s fun and Inferno is especially memorable. 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke I don‘t think anyone has ever described Dante as fun to me before. I almost read Inferno when the high school I was working at assigned it to the AP English class. I don‘t remember why I didn‘t read it that time either. Did you read the signet classic edition/Ciardi translation or the Longfellow translation? 4y
See All 8 Comments
Graywacke @GingerAntics oh, he is fun. Not funny fun, but still. I‘m using the Hollander translation (and love it - Italian and English on facing pages with extensive notes) 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke oh my, I‘ll have to see if I can get my hands on that one then. 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke the translation thing is starting to get crazy. It seems everyone and their brother has an opinion and I‘m not sure anyone agrees. There are verse versions and prose versions and hardline opinions on which are inherently superior. I think I‘m going to have to sample a little of a few of them and see which one seems like it will work for now. I think I‘d prefer verse over prose. It almost seems lazy to turn poetry to prose. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
Graywacke @GingerAntics i kind of worked through that, but had and have no strong opinion. It‘s of course really difficult to rhyme in English like Italian. Hollander is verse, but reads very much like prose. I like Hollander largely because the notes are helpful. It reads nicely too. I think as long as you avoid 19th century hurt-my-brain translations you‘ll be fine. 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke 🤣 my thoughts exactly. I‘ve heard that‘s a huge drawback of the Longfellow edition. Hollander does read very nicely. The Ciardi doesn‘t read badly by any means, the Hollander just seems a bit smoother, for lack of a better word. 4y

I‘ve been working my way through the Robert Langdon books and while they‘re a bit formulaic and repetitive with the protagonist characterization, I love the puzzles and “let‘s save the world” excitement. I really love the art history and architecture research and I‘m constantly looking up pieces the author refers to. I especially love that I get to revisit places I‘ve been in my travels, in this book Florence and Istanbul.

Such an insane story- A genius takes the problem of overpopulation and finds a solution that he‘s trying to force on the world. In the race to stop his cure for overpopulation, we follow our characters on an incredible chase, trying to solve the puzzle he has left behind before it is too late. I know some people have an odd stigma against Dan Brown, but I fall more in love with his writing with each book of his I read, this one being no exception.

carolinereadsbooks I've never understood Dan Brown hate. I thought this one was really gripping - and that ending!! 6y

"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis." Hardly before a antagonist seemed so convincing, a plot so intricate, a story so engaging at the same time..but that's Dan Brown for you.
Overall, I think this is a book that can justify the attention that is demands. Highly recommended if you're interested in all things grand.
