This book was amazing! You have to read it. Ressa is a Philippine American dual citizen, journalist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her story is incredible. She describes her work to preserve the integrity of journalism and democracy in the Philippines, the global south, and the world. What she‘s been through under Duterte and his successor, her fight against Facebook/social media misinformation…it‘s all so relevant. Just take my word and read it.

I founds this quite difficult to get into, it‘s hard going. I enjoy the magical realism genre but it didn‘t really work for me in this one as it dealt with serious subject matter. I found the writing a little ‘flowery‘. On the other hand I did find it interesting as I don‘t know much about the Argentinian ‘Dirty‘ War. So at least I‘ve learnt something! I liked the ending as it was left on a note of hope. I read this with my local book club.

Nine books for May! It was very hard to pick a favorite book for May but if forced to, I‘d pick the tagged book. Followed by a tie between Queen of the South and Sea of Tranquility. Four books this month for #Spain #foodandlit. Two books for #authoramonth. Two for #readingOceania #Palau and #NewZealand and of course all of them for #litsyatoz but mostly for #letterQ and #letterY

During dictator Franco‘s reign in #Spain, life was extraordinarily hard for average citizens but especially those whose parents fought on the “wrong side” during the Spanish Civil War. It‘s the 1950s, and along comes a Texas teen Dan whose dad wants to enter the oil business with Franco. But Dan has a huge heart and empathy and falls for a hotel maid. We learn her family‘s stories through various family members and friends and they are heart-

Texreader breaking. This author writes brilliant books. I‘ve loved them all and this one is just as good. Highly highly recommended especially about very recent events that unbelievably continued to occur into the 1980s. #foodandlit 12mo

My daughter and I tried Toro, a Spanish (as opposed to Mexican) food restaurant for #foodandlit. It was extraordinary! We had montaditos (queso de cabra frito) which knocked our socks off. Then we shared baguette sandwiches (jamón serrano with manchego cheese and cochinita pibil) and salads, and for dessert, torrijas. Toro was a brilliant find and a new restaurant for our list of places to go like last month‘s Venezuelan restaurant. #Spain

As a Texas Longhorn I‘m not sure I can tolerate a book where a character is going to A&M. The Longhorns have what they believe to be a healthy rivalry against Texas A&M, but I‘ve learned recently from parents whose kids go there, A&M actually has a Freshman orientation about how much they have to hate the Longhorns. It‘s really weird and a lot of wasted energy to encourage hate. 😕

Smrloomis Huh, I thought it was a more healthy rivalry too… encouraging it in a negative way is just bizarre! 12mo
