If you like random trivia about entirely unrelated nonsense loosely tied to “writing” via some kind of alcohol or wishful thinking, this is the book for you. If you might enjoy a (too) long diatribe about the differences between diaries and journals, complete with definitions admittedly made up by the author, this book is for you. If you want to actually learn about writing, look elsewhere.

GingerAntics Seriously, this was nearly 5 hours of “all the jobs I‘ve done that I wasn‘t qualified for.” I have no desire to revise HER writing. That is her job. She wasted multiple minutes listing off words for each letter of the alphabet. No idea why. She actually would have preferred a man had told her to smile more. I am seriously embarrassed for this woman. She comes off as a privileged, hateful person in multiple parts of the book. She needs therapy.👇🏻 20h
GingerAntics I listened to this on 3x speed just to get through the madness. The prompts are really generic and other books will get you way further. This needs a PDF with all of the prompts, otherwise it‘s just a wild ride of going back and forth trying to get them from the audio or you‘re just listening like this is a book worth listening to. I will never be reading anything by this author ever again. #RutaSepetys #YouTheStory #audiobook #neveragain 20h
julesG I've read two(?) books by her and was underwhelmed. I'm not going to touch this writing advice one. 19h
GingerAntics @julesG monstrous! I was annoyed most of the time. I don‘t know why I felt like I needed to finish it, but I probably could have bailed and been just fine. Just… ugh. 19h

An old man was misjudged by his monstrous, prejudiced neighbours, and it‘s his fault because he didn‘t tell anyone his story. His neighbours are completely off the hook for their monstrous behaviour toward someone they don‘t know, because the old man didn‘t want to tell his story. Lovely. I can see what kind of person this woman is. 🤮 She is seriously lucky there are only 2 mins left.

Birdsong28 That is rich 🙄😞 15h
GingerAntics @Birdsong28 when I got to that part, I nearly spit out my tea. Is she kidding?! I have negative desire to read anything else by here and even less desire to read historical fiction, but I imagine it won‘t take long to find her utter lack of research. 🤣😂🤣 6h

I do not like this author. She does not feel safe (if that makes sense to anyone else).
“A setting is what you make of it” is how she white washes the abuse she endured at the hands of a weirdo in LA (complete with “unauthorised portraits”). This does not feel mentally well. LA gave her “courage and a thick skin” ... don‘t forget the trauma and denial she‘s making light of.

The “questions” are sort of pointless. What does it matter to my writing if I know specifics about The Partridge Family or how many members of the Manson Family there were? What does it matter what Roald Dahl was burried with or what voice Toni Morrison‘s family used when the landlord set fire to their house? This makes no sense. What does it matter to anything which famous people have GEDs?

I fear I‘m going to have an unpopular opinion on this one…

Josie Moraine, the daughter of a brothel prostitute, is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld in New Orleans. It is a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny.

EadieB This is a character driven book and I especially liked Josie's character. Her mother was a prostitute but she was not going in that direction. The plot was one that led me to read the book to the sad ending. I look forward to reading more from this author as I really liked this book. If you like heartfelt books then you will love this book. 1y

Daisey I‘ve read this and a few others by this author and liked the others even better. 1y

Book 13 complete!

This book was great. Super atmospheric. Will definitely be reading more from Ruta Sepetys.

Fun fact: the author and I grew up in the same state of the U.S.
