Livraria Lello, Portugal‘s most famous bookstore, publishes its own editions of classical books. They are gorgeous. I bought this one, a poetry collection by the iconic Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa.

“When I write, I solemnly visit myself.“
“Be plural, like the universe!“
Remembering Fernando Pessoa and his protean plurality on his birthday.
Although this book became a bit of a struggle to finish, I‘m giving it a so-so because there were aspects I enjoyed. I felt it gave a good sense of Lisbon, Portugal in 1936. I was originally intrigued by the character of Ricardo Reis, a pen name of real author Fernando Pessoa whose ghost is also a character in this story. However, I came to detest Ricardo Reis for his treatment of Lydia, and the ending was unsatisfactory after all those pages.
I‘m continuing to make my way through this book a few pages at a time and have made it to 60%. Reading with supper made it a bit more enjoyable tonight. I‘m still not a fan of the incredibly long paragraphs and dialogue without punctuation. I feel bad for Lydia and like Ricardo Reis less and less as the story goes on.

I‘m slowly making my way through this book. I did a bit of outside reading about Ricardo Reis & Fernando Pessoa, which has helped somewhat. So far, this quote has been the most interesting to me, and I think it makes a good point.
