I don‘t get in reading slumps very often but here‘s what I do to jump the slump:

1️⃣ Changing to something light & low-stakes will usually get me moving through it. My top choices are cozy mysteries, cozy fantasy or thrillers.

2️⃣ Switching to a different format (print to audio or Kindle) or choosing a different genre of book from what I was reading mixes it up.

3️⃣ Changing location—reading outside or going to a coffeeshop can help.

LoverOfLearning I prefer audiobooks so I'm struggling with a physical book I'll pick up the audio. If that's not available or I don't like the nararrators voice I'll try a new book before going back to it. 1mo
DebinHawaii @LoverOfLearning Yep-changing to the audiobook can help if I‘m struggling with the print or vice versa. The narrator‘s voice is so important! 1mo
JamieArc I didn‘t think about the coffee shop idea. I do that too - schedule coffee shop time specifically to read. 1mo
BookmarkTavern Lots of smart ideas here! Thanks for sharing! 1mo

I feel like I‘ve been through more book slumps than normal in the past year or two. I do two things.
1. I read the first paragraph of like 5 different books that appeal to me and see if any of them immediately suck me in.
2. Graphic novels or middle grade reads that I can read quickly usually help a lot. Finishing something helps me get my reading mojo back.

BookmarkTavern Graphic novels are a great option! Thanks for posting! 1mo

I usually go through a few slumps a year ranging from a week to a month. I'm still able to read it just takes me longer because I'm unable to focus as much or am less invested.

I find shorter bites like graphic novels and short story collections can be helpful. Something about finishing a story all in one go is satisfying. Fanfiction is another go-to, though I usually don't think of that as reading in the same way 😅

@BookmarkTavern

rachelsbrittain I've actually been in a bit of a slump the last few weeks. Still reading, just not as much or as fast. It's never any fun because a slump for me is usually related to my mental health / overall stress and anxiety levels. 1mo
Kerrbearlib What fan fic do you like to read? 1mo
Graywacke Don‘t underestimate breaks. 🙂 Also try reading other things. If fiction is failing, try nonfiction. If it‘s a specific book, take a break, read about the author and the topics covered. These will change what you think about when you read it. If it‘s a certain type of book, try reading about that type of book or literature. If nonfiction is failing, try fiction or poetry. And you can try audio as a change. Wish you well. 1mo

BookmarkTavern Fanfiction totally counts! I have a couple favorites I love to revisit. Thanks for posting! 1mo
rachelsbrittain @Kerrbearlib a lot of niche TV shows with pairings I've fallen in love with lol 😂 you? 1mo
Kerrbearlib @rachelsbrittain same lol. I confess I've even written some of my own fic lol. I shouldn't be embarrassed by that, but I still want to run and hide when I tell people lol! 1mo
rachelsbrittain @Kerrbearlib oh man same! I'm not at all embarrassed to have written fic but that doesn't mean I'm sharing it with anyone 😂 1mo

Albatross: A Novel | Terry Fallis

Pickpick

Well. I wanted to read this after listening to Books Unbound, my favourite podcast. But it's only available in Canada. I'd asked a Canadian friend to purchase it but she wasn't able to get a second hand copy. Brilliant husband got it for my Christmas present 📦. Thrilled!
Odd story but so readable. I loved the gentle humour throughout and the way it's a novel about writing and effort and rewriting.
