Sisterhood of Sleuths | Jennifer Chambliss Bertman

Friendships can be complicated when you‘re 12 and school projects can be, too. Maizy learns both of these lessons as she discovers Nancy Drew and solves her own mystery with the help of old and new friends. This was cute and fun and I enjoyed watching Maizy work through some very 6th grade problems. It‘s a great homage to Nancy Drew. Also, Maizy‘s mom is a Toad the Wet Sprocket fan, so the book is a winner for that alone!

In today‘s episode of “bands I loved in high school that I NEVER expected to see referenced in a MG book published in 2022”, may I present Toad the Wet Sprocket? 😱😱😱😱 …and now I must go search for them on Tidal. 🎶

AlaMich 🙋‍♀️ I loved them too, although I was a bit older than high school age. 😬 2d
BarbaraJean 😂😂 Love this (I loved Toad in high school, too)! And it‘s such a great band to reference because the band name sounds completely unhinged if you‘ve never heard of them… 20h
DGRachel @BarbaraJean That‘s actually why I picked up their CD! I just loved the band name. 18h

Kwame Crashes the Underworld | Craig Kofi Farmer

Kwame Crashes the Underworld (Kwame Powell 1), by Craig Kofi Farmer (2024)

Premise: As he prepares to travel to Ghana for his grandmother‘s funeral, a Carolina boy is pulled into a dangerous adventure in the underworld of West African lore.

Review: This does a lot well, but was ultimately a disappointment for me. Cont.

Mattsbookaday I liked its purpose of connecting Black kids to west African lore, but felt like it didn‘t know what it wanted to be. It tried on a few themes before settling on grief, leaving a lot unresolved. Bookish Pair: For another book helping kids connect to Black culture(s), Trtistan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, by Kwame Mbalia (2019)

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

4 ⭐ This book is adorable. Growing families can be hard especially when growing families isn‘t new kids but new grandparents due to new relationships. In this book, our main character gets a new puppy. She already has a Grandma and a Noni and does not like the idea of someone coming in and taking their place. But with time and a little help, they learned that love is love, and family is family, no matter where it comes from. This book is adorable.

LibrarianRyan The illustrations are fun and match the story really well. And the author has included all three grandparents soup recipes in the back. this book is in Illinois author, and I am proud cheese from our state. 2mo

3.5 ⭐This is a wonderful book. It‘s meant more for about second grade than for reading nightly at bed. It is a little long, but it needs to be long for the purpose of the story. I really like how in the very end, not only does the author give her recipes for sauce and for chutney there‘s also information about tomatoes, information about farmworkers and a note from the author themselves. I can picture Padma in my head while I‘m waiting this.

LibrarianRyan Whether I picture her because the illustrator does a fantastic job or because of the words and having seen her for years on top Chef. I do think this book is uniquely her and it does work. Do I think she could be a frequent picture book writer… Depends. I would need to see more work to make a better opinion. 2mo
mhillis I used this book as part of a discussion event on food culture with adult English language learners. The illustrations are beautiful aren‘t they? 2mo
LibrarianRyan @mhillis that‘s cool. 2mo

I enjoyed it so much! It was a perfect way to start the year and provided a real eye-opener into the lives of people in Jamaica.

The book does an amazing job describing Jamaican life, food, scenery, and settings. And the food! It had me salivating, I could almost taste it all!
