A cute fantasy set in 1800s Ireland. The McGunnegal children set off a#in a grand adventure when their sister Colleen accidentally steps through a magic mirror to another world. Full of fairies and witches and goblins and dwarves.
Fair warning: there are actually two more books in the set

Great book following the life of a girl raised by nature. The two timelines merge together in the telling of a story about the Marsh Girl from North Carolina I#in the 1950‘s and 1960‘s. I listened to the audio version and it was great.

It‘s been a tough week. My son turned 21 and got to celebrate with just me. My daughter‘s wedding should have been yesterday but had to be postponed until next year after two and a half years of planning. We have all had to make sacrifices during these insane times and thank goodness we have our health.
I have my books and you guys to help me through this. Big love to you all and as Sarah Millican says, “stay safe and wash your f@*#in‘ hands”.

Amiable Hugs 4y
Soubhiville Aw that‘s rough. Hopefully when they are able they both will have glorious celebrations! 4y

JoScho That just sucks. Sending love to all of you 💗 4y
Texreader I sure feel for you. My son's birthday, turning 14 on April 2, was spent far differently than he planned. My niece had planned a beautiful wedding with family from afar. She ended up having it at a park with 6 guests (not me because I'm “afar“) who had to social distance. Her photos are odd. We wanted her to postpone, but she wouldn't do it. Fortunately, we went to her wedding shower about 2 weeks before the quarantining. Wishing you very best. 4y
CarolynM I hope there will be joyous family celebrations for you all when this is over. You too @Texreader 4y
Birdsong28 So sorry but it will worth the wait as it will all the more special 📚📖 4y

This book blew my friggin doors off! Holy crap! What did I just read??? This is true crime like I have never read before. Shelly Knotek and her slimy bastard of a husband are monsters. Olsen‘s account of the horror is stellar. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Andrew65 Sounds interesting! 4y
BlameJennyJane @Andrew65 it very much is. Fascinating! 4y
MySharonaK I‘m just reading this now and it‘s so messed up. Olsen is going a great job with the writing 4y

BlameJennyJane @MySharonaK doesn‘t that make it extra weird? Olsen is brilliant a#in the way the story is told and yet it‘s just so awful what is happening! 🤯 4y
MySharonaK @BlameJennyJane yes I agree! there‘s a contrast between the very good writing and the flow and the horrible happenings 4y

BlameJennyJane This is soooo good. The girls at work are sick of hearing me talk about it. 🤣🤣🤣 4y

Collection of recipes immigrant chefs, cooks and restaurateurs . Some fancy some not. Couple recipes I'd recommend are; chicken dahiwala, mughlai fish curry and Salvadoran shrimp soup. 😍

Let's talk Evie's mom! We can't believe the month is almost over. Also there's a special surprise coming next month thanks to our friends at Alfred A Knopf publishing.

SoniaC I felt Evies mom got more than her share of Evies anger. I do believe that her mom struggled after her husband left her and was not fully present and making some poor choices however I couldn't understand Evie's anger when it was the father who was responsible for the breakup. 8y
Hooked_on_books While any mother is likely to bear the brunt of her teenagers' angst, I think Evie's mom fueled the fire with her choices. She failed to discipline Evie and prioritized the men in her life over her child, which helped to push Evie to look for structure elsewhere. 8y
LibrarianRyan I think wives mom was going through the usual steps for many surprised divorced wives. I definitely think Evie was over reacting. She didn't react the same way to her dad and his secretary. 8y

Bookworm54 I agree @SoniaC , I can understand why Evie would feel some anger towards her mum as she is definitely more interested in dating than in her daughter, but she never shows the same resentment to her dad or his girlfriend who effectively were more in the wrong. Her mum was obviously not coping well. However (1/2) 8y
Bookworm54 I think that Evie was pushing the boundaries to try and get her mum to notice her, and that trying to get attention from her seemingly non interested mother may have caused some of her bad decisions (2/2) 8y
ShelfofUnreadBooks I think Evie takes it out on her Mum because she's there whereas her Father remains a distant and rather inept figure, even when she's staying with him. I also get the sense that Evie sees it as being her Mum's failure to 'keep' her Dad and his interest that leads to the breakdown of her structured and secure existence. It's misplaced anger, and her Mum does let deal with it all that well because she's struggling to cop with her new life too. 8y
BookClubShmookClub I think Evie was doing pretty average teen rebellion-type stuff that her mom just wasn't equipped to handle or even notice- it was kind of a case of bad timing that her mom was kind of going through her own growing pains as a newly divorced woman. But at the same time, that lack of attention and connection kind of egged Evie on to find those things elsewhere. It wasn't her mom's "fault" but she played a part. 8y
LitLogophile The initial growing apart is expected, but I thought that Evie's mom should have done a lot more to bridge the gaps in their relationship when they drifted apart. The lack of a place to comfortably call home definitely led to some of Evie's decisions. 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I second everyone's thoughts here. I think what it boils down to is that Evie feels betrayed because her mom is favoring her boyfriend over her, so she's lashing out. 8y
BookHermit As @BookClubShmookClub pointed out, Evie's mom is busy sorting out her own life and behaves in every way we expect a newly divorced mom to behave. Evie's reaction is also typical. Suzanne is the catalyst, the gremlin in the typical teenage angst story. Evie could have just as easily developed an eating disorder or become a "mean girl" type but the cult/commune situation is entirely more interesting and problematic. (1/2) 8y
BookHermit The Girls is fascinating because Evie could be any girl, if not someone you can relate to then certainly someone you know. Her mother could have paid more attention but would Evie have noticed or cared? 2/2 8y
Jillsandypants I felt like Evie's mom was not really given a personality. She clearly was interested in dating, and not interested or involved in Evie's life until the break in incident, but she was pretty much a wallflower in my opinion. Alternatively, Tamar was one of the most likable characters for me. 8y
Julsmarshall I agree, @BookHermit ! That is the really scary part. 8y
releasekarma I think Evie viewed her mother as weak. Her mom ignored her fathers affair & once they were divorced, she had a parade of different boyfriends. She couldn't rely on just herself. She needed a man & she would put that man before her daughter. I know the book doesn't really get into this aspect, but I imagine Russell would fuel that resentment Evie already held. 8y
moranadatter I wonder how much we can believe what Evie told us about her mom. How much was real and how much was distortion? Her relationship with her dad felt overly rosy too. I find it hard to believe she got off as easily as she did after running away. 8y
Callemarie I honestly see evie's relationship with her mother like kids who did join mansions cult. These were kids who felt like outsiders I#in their family or didn't agree with things their parents taught or believed. I find this to be a huge influence on kids leaving home and how they become huge targets for charismatic leaders. 8y
