Mehso-so

Although the premise was interesting the writing style of this novel was too erratic and jumped from idea to idea without any transition. I shouldn't have been surprised by the racism but that was another very unpleasant experience reading this.

The author's life experience was a huge inspiration for this, considering that she is of mixed race. (As an immigrant who moved a lot I can completely relate to all of that)

Doppoetry The novel tries to make Bertha a more sympathetic character but I can't exactly feel bad for colonizers and racists.

I am not a huge fan of Mr.Rochester but he does come off like an intelligent man, despite his temper. I believe it to be a disservice to him as a character in general. I think he could have figured out Bertha's family history with mental illness on his own without being tipped off about it.

Doppoetry I was hoping this novel would delve more into the mental illness aspect. But, it was more focused on blaming everything on Mr. Rochester and society's mistreatment of her, instead of a wider cause. (not that abuse can't make you mentally ill, sometimes mental illness runs in the family) (edited) 2d
Doppoetry There is absolutely a wider discussion about imperialism/colonialism here and I completely understand the harm of it, but I don't think it's presented very well in this novel. Rochester's opinions on the colonized Jamaica feel stretched a bit too far, even if you read between the lines of Jane Eyre. 2d

Pickpick

Set in Jamaica, a young Rastafarian boy comes home from school crying after his teacher cut off his dreads. His grandmother may be blind but she can see that this event will have serious repercussions. The story goes back and forth in time, giving us a deeper understanding of this town and the divides that bind but also separate its inhabitants. Miller manages a lot in less than 300 pages. #24in2024

Patsy is desperate to leave Jamaica. Leaving her daughter behind, she heads to New York. It isn‘t the utopia she hopes and she enters an undocumented life barely scraping by doing menial work. As the story progresses you learn more of Patsy‘s motivations and demons. The story explores race, sex, class, gender, immigration and the life of an undocumented migrant in a hostile country. A great, thoughtful and thought-provoking read 👇

JillR I should say however I found this incredibly hard to get into, more or less for the first 200 pages, and very mainly bailed before something clicked. It also took most of the book to not actively dislike Patsy. 2mo

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

Bailedbailed

I just couldn‘t get through this in time for the #Jamaica ReadingtheAmericas2023 challenge, and it didn‘t capture me. Some of the writing was really eloquent with intriguing characters, but it just seemed to wander around too much for me to fully engage with it. Maybe I‘ll come back to it another time.

Librarybelle If it doesn‘t grab your attention, I‘m a firm believer in bailing or setting to the side for later 4mo
