Patsy | Nicole Dennis-Benn
When Patsy gets her long-coveted visa to America, it's the culmination of years of yearning to be reunited with Cicely, her oldest friend and secret love, who left home years before for the "land of opportunity." Patsy's plans do not include her religious mother or even her young daughter, Tru, both of whom she leaves behind in a bittersweet trail of sadness and relief. But Brooklyn is not at all what Cicely described in her letters, and to survive as an undocumented immigrant, Patsy is forced to work as a bathroom attendant, and ironically, as a nanny. Meanwhile, back in Jamaica, Tru struggles with her own questions of identity and sexuality, grappling every day with what it means to be abandoned by a mother who has no intention of returning. Passionate, moving, and fiercely urgent, Patsy is a haunting depiction of immigration and womanhood, and the silent threads of love stretching across years and oceans.

I plan on doing a LOT of reading over the next 5-6 weeks but I will be shocked if anything displaces this from my top spot for the year. Interestingly Here Comes the Sun was my favorite read of 2016. I am a lifelong fan. 5⭐️

Blaire I‘ve never heard of her or either book...but I am stacking both bases on your endorsement. 3w

I loved Here Comes the Sun so much that I‘ve been letting this sit for 5 months because I feared it would be a let down. 200 pages in I can unequivocally state that it‘s even better. I ❤️ Nicole Dennis-Benn.

Loved seeing Nicole Dennis-Benn and Ocean Vuong at the Decatur Book Festival today!!!!

My book club just read Vuong‘s book and I suspect that since so many of us were in the room, Patsy will be a pick soon!

This book should be mandatory, as it is extremely relevant with what is going on with our news cycle, It is extremely enlightening, and will drop you right into center of Patsy‘s story. Nicole Dennis-Benn is an immigrant herself and I felt that she has really put herself into this story. It is heartbreaking most of the time, but the writing is good, it well worth the strife.

I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as her first book. Despite its length, this book failed to provide much clarity on the title character or her motivations throughout much of the story. The book was also unfocused and the narrative shifted too often - a love story, an immigrant story, a coming of age story? She is a good writer, but couldn‘t seem to find the guiding story for the title character. 2.5⭐️ #Hoopla

jamicuns I finished an audiobook last night and chose to listen to The Gone Dead over Patsy, guess I‘m glad I did. Thanks for the heads up. 😀 4mo
marleed I think this was a bit of a miss as far as an immigration story goes because it‘s hard to connect with Patsy. As I read it, it broke my heart that a child is born to a mother who lack the capacity to love. From that perspective I thought it was interesting. I wonder why Jenna Bush picked it for her bookclub pick? 4mo
Redwritinghood @jamicuns Hope you like The Gone Dead! 4mo
Redwritinghood @marleed I found this audiobook on Hoopla and grabbed it because I really liked her first book. For me, this one just didn‘t hold together well. It was like she couldn‘t decide what it should be about so she just threw it all together. I agree that Tru‘s story was sadder in some respects, but Patsy was also abandoned in a way as a child. You would think she wouldn‘t want to do that to her own child. 4mo

I like to read immigrant stories and was interested to see this Jamaican journey to its end. It was a slow burn to be fully engaged in Patsy since emotions behind her facts were missing for me. On the other hand, I was completely intrigued by Patsy‘s daughter, Tru, and her coming-of-age story. I leave this book thinking most about children born to a parent that is not prepared to love a child.

Finished my last #bookfitnesschallenge goal for the week. This week was not kind in helping me find my motivation to read or move my body. I dug deep. I felt mentally and physically drained. Thankful I could finish. Now to celebrate with a book and a blueberry lemon pop. #bfc #bfcr3 #TeamFitLit

Patsy tells the story of a queer woman that leaves Jamaica, and her daughter Tru, to pursue what she believes to be the love of her life that lives in the USA. Told in a shifting narrative from her daughter Tru & Patsy we get a rare view & raw description on what it‘s like to be a Mother that leaves a child behind while also feeling what it‘s like to be a child that gets left behind. This is only one theme/layer of this complex novel.

It would have been helpful to know the title character‘s true motivations for leaving her 5 year old daughter and not communicating with her for more than 10 years. This was eventually given but it was too little too late.

3,5 out of 5 stars. Dennis-Benn is a great writer and she immersed me in Jamaica and the world of a struggling immigrant woman chasing the American dream. A little too tidy of an ending.

Great book following two complex characters- mother and daughter in the US and Jamaica. Well written, each character isn‘t perfect, but they maneuver through the consequences of the choices they made (and those around them) to grow and love themselves. Great summer read!

I really like Nicole Dennis-Benn. This is about a mother who flees Jamaica to America in an effort to save herself, leaving behind a young child. As the story moves on you see Patsy struggle with disillusionment in her new home, and watch Tru try to grow up and understand herself without a mother. I think they'll both stay in my mind a long time.

Caterina Okay I'll save it for when I'm ready for a heavy one then. 👍 I just remember loving Here Comes the Sun so much but feeling like it hit me so hard, it had me really sad for a week or two and then I had to read happy books for a bit to recover. 6mo

I was first in line at library for this recent release! Excited to dig in this week-end.

Theaelizabet I may have mentioned earlier that I was so-so about her first novel (great subject, melodramatic handling, imho), but she's obviously talented and this one really sounds good. I'll be really interested in reading your thoughts. 6mo

Patsy is an immersive story of heartache, longing, doubt and acceptance. A story about motherhood and immigration, expectations and reality.

Told in alternating chapters, Dennis-Benn chronicles Patsy‘s journey in Brooklyn and the ensuing years of Tru‘s childhood in Jamaica. Their similar parallels and experiences are a stark reminder that no one place is better than another. #NetGalley #ARC

#MayMovieMagic My current ARC is the story of Patsy, a young Jamaican woman who leaves her daughter behind as she journeys to America in hopes of improving their lives. Patsy is #hookedOnAFeeling that America will offer all that she‘s yearning for, including a lost love...her friend Cicely. But as we often discover, America is not a friendly place for an undocumented immigrant. This story is really good so far, although a bit repetitive.
