CocoReads Nice! Congrats @GingerAntics Im closing in. I have about 42000 words in and even though I realized the other day the bad guy isn‘t who I thought he is, I can still end it more or less the way I want to. It‘s super imperfect, and will need quite a bit of editing and filler to make it truly done but I think I can do this! 5y

Apparently I can officially validate my 50K+ (not yet finished) novel tomorrow (20 Nov). I'm not sure if I want to do that right away or if I should wait until the end of the month to validate all the words I get by the end of the month (or if that even matters). 🤷🏼‍♀️

julesG I might have bailed. I haven't written more than 3.5k words. I am not stuck idea-wise or plot-wise, there's just the more pressing issue of filing for social care to be able to afford sitting around writing that I have to take care of. This not knowing where I am heading financially has taken over all my brain power. Why do such things happen in November? 5y

Now that I know where this whole thing is going (and what all 42 of the short stories are), I'm doing well getting these short stories written between things that have already been written and improvements that make things work better and them stand on their own more. I'm not worried about this lagging now.

LibrarianRyan I think it would be interesting to do the side stories first, then the MC story. So it hints around what‘s going on, and it‘s reveled at the end. 5y

You would see that the MC has disowned himself, but you'd have no idea WHY until later. Hm. I rather like this idea. I knew asking you geniuses would be a good idea!!! GingerAntics @LibrarianRyan @Jilly6183 giving my stories titles is always the hardest part for me. Often times the story is long since finished being written when I finally find the right title...but I think I've found it. If I do it this way with the story all sort of disjointed and not getting the full picture at once, I could all it "It All Fell Apart" or "Putting the Pieces Back Together" or "Rebuilding" and it fits the story and the format. twohectobooks My preference would be chronological. But then I am the type of reader who tends to skip appendices on the basis of the assumption that if the author wanted me to know the information they‘d find a way to include it in the main text. Not sure how common that is! 5y

Jilly6183 @GingerAntics @LibrarianRyan That's a really cool idea, too! IMO, there just needs to be some kind of reveal that makes reading the second half interesting and relevant. So either the secondary characters reveal something you couldn't get from the MC's story, or you get a story from the secondary characters and then the MC reveals the missing link (e.g., why he disowned himself). 5y

GingerAntics @twohectobooks really? Sometimes the best little tidbits are in the appendix because with the constraints of POV something couldn't have been known in the main text. I'm also used to reading the appendix in nonfiction so it's totally natural for me. lol Nothing would really be an appendix anyway. It's all part of the full picture as it were. They're like the bonus features on the dvd, just before the actual story. lol (edited) 5y

GingerAntics @Jilly6183 there would be several missing links, because other than a few places (that wouldn't answer any real questions) no part of the story proper is going to end up being told by secondary characters. That second half does need to be worth reading, and that's what makes me a little concerned with doing it that way. (edited) 5y

twohectobooks Yep, like I said, I‘m not sure how common this approach is. I‘m quite an impatient/lazy reader, apparently! I also find it funny that I‘m making this comment while reading House of Leaves for the second time, a book that‘s built on fully exploring a multitude of footnotes and appendices. Which I LOVE haha. 5y

GingerAntics @twohectobooks ROTFL I used to be that way until high school when my friends and I were all reading this book we loved. They were all taking about something and I had no idea what they were talking about. They promptly sent me back to the epilogue and appendix and I figured it out. lol 5y

Can't believe I've made it this far. I wasnt quite sure I was going to be able to make the word count in a month, and I'm this far in just a week. I'm not even entirely sure what all is in this document...I just know that it is all narrative related to my story.

CocoReads @GingerAntics no, it doesn‘t really show in the daily totals but even my days off have been getting away from me. My hours start dropping in a couple weeks so I should be stronger at the end of the month. 5y

GingerAntics @LibrarianJen I actually didn't like how it was going and just the other day I figured out I needed to do it a different way, thinking in terms of short stories instead of chapters. So I'm going to do those, rewriting was I have from before Nov 1 and what I've done since then to get it into that format. So I'm kind of editing and kind of rewriting. I'm not sure if I should keep updating my work count or leave it at 50,000. 5y

CocoReads I‘ve been full time since I started while “learning the ropes” but they actually hired me for 2-3 days a week and to cover sick days and vacations. I may float between hospitals for a bit as well. So I‘m not sure how much I@ really going to drop. Other than being busy and tired, I like the job and the pay so I‘m not sure whether to hope they drop or not.🤷‍♀️ 5y
