Gold Rush | Jordan Lynde

Some pictures of the New Zealand gold rush in the 1860s (appx). Clockwise from top left: Gabriel's Gully with the tents; a bank/office; buildings in a New Zealand town; gold mine in the 1860s (Westport?). #luminariesbuddyread

Ashley_Nicoletto That's great! Thanks for sharing. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes Oh so cool! I know it's not words but it's background info, so I think this could use the #luminariesglossary hashtag! 6y
LeahBergen Oh, cool. 👏🏻 6y

Maori proverbs, apparently! #luminariesglossary #luminariesbuddyread

LeahBergen Good to know! 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I didn't even think about googling these. I was just so annoyed by them that I skipped over them completely. 😂😂 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Ashley_Nicoletto Annoyed? 😂 I guess it is annoying not to have a translation but I appreciated him making things a little harder for Balfour and telling him that his language was just as important. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Natasha.C.Barnes Not with the story line. I have a personal vendetta against books switching languages randomly. It's silly. I don't know why. My kindle would probably even translate it for me. I just alwaysss skip over it. I'm sure it means I miss parts of the story. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Things to work on as a human. 6y

I spent some time reviewing Week 1 of The Luminaries today. Here are the words I looked up! After making the list, I realized I forgot to include those from Jupiter in Sagittarius🤦🏻‍♀️ Time to move on to Week 2! #luminariesglossary #luminariesbuddyread

mhillis Thanks @Bloomingjen for the idea to keep a list! 6y
Lindy Vocabulary boosting = brain building. 💪🧠 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes Wow, I don't even remember some of those!! But I do know now that a barque has 3 masts! Now if only that would come up in trivia... 6y
mhillis @Natasha.C.Barnes @Lindy 🤓 Barque, lucifers, and stevedores came up often! I‘m wondering if I‘ll need these words again but it‘s fun to learn new things. This book is certainly giving us lots of opportunities😂 6y

I‘m reading The Luminaries on the Kindle app and the X-ray feature links to information from Shelfari. Here is an example about Lauderback. Has anyone else been using this? #luminariesglossary #luminariesbuddyread

Lacythebookworm That‘s awesome! 6y
Redwritinghood I‘m reading on Kindle too. Will have to check this out. 6y
LMJenkins New to Litsy and wondering how to get involved with a buddy read? Thanks! #luminariesbuddyread (edited) 6y

Natasha.C.Barnes That's so awesome--I wish I had that!! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @LMJenkins You just join in! If you look back in the hashtag you can find the reading schedule. 😘 6y
mhillis @LMJenkins Yes, just join in! There are some others going on too. Check out @LitsyBuddyRead and @LitsyHappenings for more 6y
mhillis @Lacythebookworm @Redwritinghood @Natasha.C.Barnes It‘s helpful, especially for readers like me who have a hard time keeping characters straight!! 6y
mhillis EllieDottie's post on Litsy http://litsy.com/p/cmpJVE44WW82 @LMJenkins If this link works, it‘s a post with info about the current buddy reads happening on Litsy 6y
LMJenkins Thank you! 6y

Here is the map as requested! It's not much in terms of information, but it is pretty. Let me know what you can't read and I'll type it out for you. #luminariesbuddyread #luminariesglossary

I've been making some notes in the character chart--here's what I've got so far. #luminariesbuddyread #luminariesglossary

hermyknee Thank you! 6y
cariashley Is that a map on the left??? I‘m almost positive I don‘t have that in my edition (US hardcover) but have a cat sleeping on me so can‘t get up to check! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @cariashley It is a map! Let me know if you want me to post it for you! 6y

Rachellynnwright I also do not have map! Thanks @Natasha.C.Barnes 6y
BarbaraBB I‘ve got the same edition but completely forgot there is a list of characters. Thanks for reminding me, it comes in handy! 6y

This book was published in 2013--how does the Internet not yet contain a Luminaries-specific guide to decoding these charts? I know it's not necessary to the enjoyment of the book, but I'd like to know more without becoming an astrology expert. 😂 #luminariesbuddyread #yearofthechunkster

JamieArc I read this a few years ago and did a lot of googling on that - though I don‘t remember finding anything particularly useful or helpful to the plot of the book. Like it was just a side note the author added for her own amusement. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto Agreed! I'm so curious about these. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @JamieArc Well I know that they were used to actually determine the plot...I'm not going to predict the plot, but it would be fun to read it and be able to say "oh yeah, that fits", you know? 6y

Nafiza This book drove me nuts. The writing is gorgeous but honestly it is way too long. Haha 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Nafiza Haha, yes, I am not inapprehensive in starting this book, hence why it has sat on my shelves for some years unread. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Nafiza Oh barf, I'm starting to talk like the book already. 6y
Nafiza Haha. I wish you all the best. It took me MONTHS to finish it because the pace is so darned slow. 6y
hermyknee Ooo! Can I add the #LuminariesGlossary hashtag to this post?! I love your notes, and I think I will be referring to them as I read! 😊 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Nafiza And our schedule has us reading it in 6 weeks! I'd better hurry up. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @hermyknee Oh YEAH! I didn't see your earlier post! If this hashtag is a thing now then I'll end up posting way too often... ? I already have notes in my book for things like that "phial of sal volatile", which is smelling salts, as it turns out. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @hermyknee I also went into the character chart and started writing in the signs with each character--and I think I've figured out the planets too except for the last two on that list--Anna and Emery. 6y
TommieMarie74 I used to plot astrological birth charts, which is what this looks like. As I get caught up, I‘ll pull out my astrology books and see what I can decipher for us. 😊 6y
hermyknee On page 22 there is a quote that says (of Moody), “He had a fondness for cheap news, and was amused to see that the town‘s Most Alluring Dancer also advertises her services as the town‘s Most Discreet Accoucheuse” which, apparently, is French for midwife. I feel like if we don‘t have a Luminaries glossary, so much of this will go over my head! 😂 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @hermyknee Hah! I read that bit without looking it up, thanks for the info! Also, I think Astrophysics and astrology would not be found in the same volume... 6y
hermyknee @Natasha.C.Barnes No, it absolutely wouldn‘t, but, it might make me feel smarter than this book is making me feel 6y
hermyknee Too bad there is no astrology for people in a hurry because from what I‘ve read, it takes quite a while for someone to understand all the nuances- particularly how those nuances would have affected this book. More particularly; she‘s referencing an astrological calendar from 1866. I feel like I‘m going to come away from this book with a lot of knowledge. I‘m just not sure how relevant it will be to my daily life 😂 (or for how long I‘ll retain it! 6y
KatieB Ooohhh....so the astrogical sign mentioned at the beginnimg of eaxh chapter tells you who the maim character of the chapter is going to be?! Is that right? I feel like something just clicked! Thanks for the photo! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @KatieB I think so! I'm only a few chapters in, but the first chapters are mercury in Sagittarius and Jupiter in Sagittarius so one describes Moody&Balfour and the other Lauderback&Balfour, so I'm looking to see if the pattern holds. There are some chapter titles I still don't understand though. 6y
mhillis I‘m reading on kindle and if I look up a character name then the X-ray feature links to Shelfari and gives some info @Natasha.C.Barnes 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @mhillis Jeeeealous! 6y

Bloomingjen my vocabulary has increased thanks to this book. i read Infinite Jest last year and whenver I had to look up a book, I would write it and the definition in the front of the book. I am continuing that tradition with this book. 6y
Lexeegee I love when I have to look up a word! 6y

hermyknee @Bloomingjen that‘s a great idea! 6y
hermyknee Love that the #LuminariesGlossary is taking off! ❤️ We could write a Reader‘s Companion to this book with all the things we‘re finding! (edited) 6y
Bloomingjen so far I have lucifer, sal volatile, perspicacity (thought i knew what that meant but wanted the exact definition), and blackguard. oh, and the midwife word which was a french word, I rhink 6y
mhillis I‘m glad I‘m reading it on kindle so it‘s easy to look up words!! @Bloomingjen That‘s a great idea to keep a vocabulary list! 6y
