So excited to be thinking about #CampLitsy24. I have seen so many great nominations posted today. I tried to stay away from those already nominated.

A big thank you to our camp hosts. @squirrelbrain @Megabooks @BarbaraBB

Chelsea.Poole Great list! And I loved the tagged — there‘s so much to discuss! (edited) 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I waffled on Martyr! It was my 5th pick, so glad it is an option! I hear such good things about it. 2w

Bereavement. War. Death. Families that teach us love and violence simultaneously. I loved this book to the core. Especially since it tells of what colonisers can do to the colonised so brutally, so factually, that it truly hits you in the face that, yes, this is what happened. To many.

My first book by a Malaysian author. Wow. Simply wow. Short stories of various genres - literary fiction, #fantasy, ghost story, #romance, all steeped in Malaysian myths.
Grouped, very cleverly, in Here (various folk groups in Malaysia), There (Malaysians emigrated to Great Britain) and Elsewhere (spirit world), a compendium of very strong stories and a glimpse into foreign worlds. 4,5/5⭐

Eggs Amazing 🤩 1mo

Doing my research tonight to fill in some holes for my challenges this year, I realized this book I‘m rereading works for #Malaysia, coming up in September for #foodandlit. I‘ve been reading it for #Australia #readingOceania. It didn‘t hit me that around half of it occurs in Malaysia! So even though I‘m about 30% into it, I‘m going to put it on hold till September. Since it‘s a reread I think I won‘t have to start at the beginning again.

Amiable Oh, I adored this book when I read it in college (a long time ago 😬). 2mo

My Life as a Fake | Peter Stafford Carey, Carey
post image
Pickpick

Truly Carey‘s masterpiece, even years later reading it for the second time. A world where nothing is real, every character and every event is a deception, a misdirection, a hoax and/or a joke, a beautiful world of words with deadly consequences. This has a modern resonance, though it was written before fake news and liars as politicos were really a thing, it‘s still relevant as a testament to truth. Carey makes you believe that words matter.

The author was a journalist and it shows in his writing. He is clear and factual in his analysis of Southeast Asian politics and society. It also shows that his heart is breaking for this region that has been his life‘s work, first as a journalist and then as a mediator. Overall, a very depressing pick. Also, it should be noted that this book was published in 2017, so obviously some things have changed.
