Jess, having recently moved to Malaysia w/ her parents, starts hearing a voice in her head that claims to be her grandmother who needs help w/ some unfinished business. Only then Jess gets mixed in w/ a god, gangsters, & family secrets.

I really loved the world building & the fantastical elements in this. But there was something about how Jess & Ah Ma‘s relationship shifted that bugged me. & this got much darker than I usually enjoy.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Happy Pride Month everyone! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

The tagged book is my choice for June‘s #QueerBC and I can‘t wait to get to it. I‘ve loved everything else I‘ve read by Zen Cho, although this looks pretty different.

#SundayFunday Hope you all have a safe and wonderful day, and don‘t forget to tag me!

julesG It's good, if a bit weird. I truly enjoyed it. 2w

Spirits Abroad | Zen Cho

I'm not sure quite how to rate this one because I did decide to finish it, and liked some of the stories, but I never felt grabbed and constantly felt kinda like DNFing it. I couldn't even tell you why exactly; I like Zen Cho's writing, and there wasn't anything specific I disliked, just... somehow didn't work for me.

Weretigers, severed fingers, mysterious dreams. Chinese and Malaysian superstitions and mythology in 1930s Malaya clash against colonialism and the medical world; for the large part I thoroughly enjoyed this (although got tired of all the severed finger talk until the action ramped up!) The romance didn‘t do it for me, but otherwise a compelling story.

sarahbarnes Severed finger talk! 😆 3w

repost for @PuddleJumper:

This is going up early because I‘m slammed this week and the weekend is Eurovision!

June‘s pick for #QueerBC is Zen Cho!

If you‘ve read this author before, drop a recommendation or let us know what you‘ll be reading.

I loved Black Water Sister, can‘t recommend that enough. I‘m going to try Sorcerer to the Crown as it‘s been on my shelf for ages.

There are so many historical fiction books out there focusing on Germany during WWII, that I found it a refreshing (for lack of a better word) change to have a novel shine light on Asia (specifically Malaya) during this time &highlight the lives effected &tragedies that occurred there.

There are serious topics &it‘s at times a difficult read, but I appreciated how the author approached each topic &how informative this historical fiction book was.

GatheringBooks Awesome! I wonder if the novel mentioned Singapore - as they used to be one country. :) 2mo
Kristy_K @GatheringBooks It didn‘t but when I was looking up some of the history from the book, I saw that and I never knew they used to be one country. So much they don‘t teach us in history. 2mo

This book was my least favorite of her three. I love her ability to mix in folk and this was no different. But the story fell flat for me.

Pickpick

Relationships are at the center of all stories: child and parent, husband and wife. Other themes are displacement through immigration and how the generations cope differently with their longing for the other country. I love Madeleine Thien‘s writing style, the way she crafts characters and leads us into their world is masterfully done. It makes me want to read everything she ever wrote. Definitely a pick.
