I'm halfway through this amazingly-written novel. I've read quite a number of novels about modern China history, none of them could compare with Madeleine Thien's melancholic and achingly beautiful prose. I really hope it'll win the #ManBookerPrize2016 which will be announced later. 😘😍

Spiderfelt Sadly she didn't, but she did win the $25,000 Govenor General's award in Canada. 7y
brbamreading @Spiderfelt Perhaps next time she'll get it for her another masterpiece. :) 7y
Spiderfelt I have no doubt that unless she meets an untimely death, her career will be rich with works as elegant as this one. 7y
brbamreading @Spiderfelt Lol. Btw, have you read her other books? 7y
Spiderfelt Just one. We attended the same high school; she was in my brother's class. I love reading books set in Vancouver. She might be the only author I've read who has set their books there. I loved 7y

This #Thanksgiving weekend I'm thankful for leisurely Sunday morning reads. I'm on #3 of the Booker shortlist and this is my favourite to win by a country mile

Simona I've read everything from #manbookerprize2016 longlist and this book is an absolute winner and if he doesn't I'll be disappointed😔 8y
dixi_e I was debating reading this but now I'm sold! 8y
BookishTrish @dixi_e Do! I'd love to hear what you think of it. I'm still on hold for The Sellout and Do Not Say We Have Nothing. His Bloody Project is at the top of my TBR 8y
dixi_e Do Not Say We Have Nothing didn't appeal to me. It's an interesting story and well written but I never really cared about the narratives or characters and felt it was waaay too long. 8y
dixi_e (I just went and put this on hold! 😄) 8y

My selection for Man Booker shortlist.

#manbooker2016 #manbooker

travellingbibliophile This shortlist is so close to mine! I've only got four books on mine though since I couldn't decide on others 😅 8y
Simona @gemkarita My only problem was decision between Eileen and All That Man Is, but I'm sure that the jury doesn't share the same view with me.😃 8y
RebeccaH We overlap on three! 8y

Simona @RebeccaH This is a good sign or not? This is my personal-wish list, but I expect totally different list from the jury. Without Coetzee? No go! 8y
travellingbibliophile @Simona hah, you and me both! I reckon they'll just have to put Coetzee up there. 8y
Simona @gemkarita I agree💯‼️ 8y
RebeccaH I expect the official list to be different than mine too, if only because they clearly have different taste than I do! 8y

Pickpick

The basic story is simple- cruel murder happens in the Scottish village. What makes the book worth reading is the pictures and realistic description of the customs and traditions of life in the middle of the 19th century, but above all is an excellent and deep characterization. I read a book a week ago and my rate was then so-so and now, after a few days of reflection, I absolutely have no doubt in the jury's decision.

KVanRead Great review. It really does take time sometimes to decide how we really feel about a book. 8y
Simona @KVanRead My first reaction was- this is nothing special, this book don't belong among nominees. I'm glad that I gave it a time and now - I think about that story very often. And that's what good books can do😃 8y

Pickpick

Story spans over several decades in Chinese turbolentne history, which has dramatically changed lives of individuals and these political decisions forced people into immorality and silence. We follow history of the two generations of family who finds their freedom of speech in music and written word. The story is layered, dense and with the almost poetic prose, which is in contrast with the brutal content, but the final result is magnificent.

MrBook Wonderful review 😊👍🏻! 8y
Simona @MrBook Thanks ☺️ 8y
Simona @shawnmooney I'm so glad that I didn't read negative reviews before the book. This book has completely won my heart - as the story, with the structure and with the beautiful language without sentimentality. 8y

Part of the re-education in Communist countries, self-criticism and informing family members.

New morning with a new book for the #biblioweekend

shawnmooney How is it so far? I've heard mixed reviews but am so interested in reading it.... 8y
Simona @shawnmooney I'm on page 134, so it's difficult to say, but I like it so far. The story is of course sad, but is running steadily, despite the abundance of characters and switching between the time. 8y
