This has been on my to read list for a while, but I think maybe I should bump it up! I didn't expect it to win. Have any of you read it? What did you think? #ManBooker2016

Pickpick

I love love loved this book! It had everything I wanted - all of the quirky stylistic choices so rare in modern books! I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Hannah Kent's #BurialRites although they are definitely different in style. I really respect Burnet for refusing to hold the readers' hand to guide us blindly to a set conclusion

roneea I went straight from this into Hannah Kents new book, magical! If you loved Burial Rites you will 100% love her new one! 7y
laurenkferguson @roneea I'm so keen to read the new one because she has such a beautiful style, I'm just waiting for it to arrive 😊 7y

Deborah Smith, translator of The Vegetarian, only started teaching herself #Korean in 2010. Damn. #ManBooker2016 #translatedbooks

shawnmooney That's probably at least part of the reason I found the prose so uninspired. :-( 8y
BookishFeminist Wow, she's talented. I loved the translation of it- I can't judge whether it stayed true to the author's intentions but I found it to be incredibly effective. 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney I think it's the style of the book instead- I know a couple folks who read it in the original Korean & the translation. In their opinion it seemed on par & it was a "very Korean novel." Have you read much Korean lit? I'm under the impression that the distant emotional style was intentional & what made it so unsettling, which was a large point of the book. 8y

shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I have not. I don't know whether to blame the author or the translator for such a deeply unsatisfying reading experience… :-) But I'm glad so many others enjoyed it! 8y
Smrloomis @shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I haven't read it, but I can't believe she only started in 2010. She even says that she couldn't contact the author to check her translation, which surprises me. I would think a translator and an author *should* work closely together. Anyway, since I've only read Kyung-Sook Shin's Please Look After Mom, maybe I need to read this next. 8y
shawnmooney @Smrloomis I tend to agree with you; it doesn't sound like anything to brag about, the lack of training and lack of communication with the author 8y
BookishFeminist @Smrloomis It's one of my favorites of 2016, you should. Be aware that it's not for the feint of heart- trigger warnings all over the place. I'm looking forward to the next translated publication of Han Kang's coming out early next year in the US. 8y
Smrloomis @shawnmooney hopefully someone who knows both read them side by side? I'm surprised since translators can train for such a long time. I'm all for having the translators work more clearly appreciated, but it's really surprising that she hasn't been at it that long. Impressive though. 8y
Smrloomis @BookishFeminist thanks, I will keep that in mind since I don't generally read very violent or otherwise upsetting work. I'm skipping A Little Life for that very reason. 8y
BookishFeminist @Smrloomis Definitely take your time with this one if that's the case- it's very raw. 😬 I love dark, eccentric & abstract things so take that into account. It makes for a very interesting study on culture & oppression though. 8y
Laura317 I've not read this yet, but I'm impressed that the translator just learned the language. I have to wonder if that being so new to the language she might have missed some nuances? The kind that a more experienced translator might have known? Still, an amazing accomplishment! 8y
ultrabookgeek For some reason, I really thought it was translated by a Korean person who spoken English! I felt like it captures a lot of the appreciation of nature, reflection and distance I observe in Korean media. I am even more determined now to learn Korean! I do wish the author and translator could have worked together on this. Looking for any additional Korean novels if anyone has more suggestions. 8y
Smrloomis @Laura317 yes, I definitely agree. She could have missed nuances (although I suppose a more seasoned translator could to) and it's also damn impressive. 8y
Smrloomis @ultrabookgeek you should definitely learn Korean. I wish I spoke it! In the meantime, are there #Littens with #Korean literature recommendations? I imagine the fact that this book has won should generate some more interest into Korean lit. 8y
