⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked the darkness of this book and this terrible sense that something bad is going to happen (which it obviously did). It‘s certainly a weird book but finally in a weird way I like. Now I just need someone to explain if it all means what I think it means??

And wow, that ending.

pigeonsandcrows I, too, was strangely drawn to this book whilst everyone else in my book club strongly disliked it. It looks quite striking in the flowers! 5y
thewallflower0707 @pigeonsandcrows the cover is so gorgeous!! And I totally understand why some people dislike the book, it‘s certainly not for everyone. 5y
thewallflower0707 @pigeonsandcrows i was wondering what you think about the ending- does the narrator have some sort of awakening, is she free from the drugs, what will happen now that her friend is dead? 5y

pigeonsandcrows It's definitely not a book for everyone. I enjoy unlikable narrators, but still cringed at her sometimes. But I thought it was such an interesting book. 5y
pigeonsandcrows I'm not sure what will happen to her. I felt like the author wasn't really interested in exploring her eventual fate as she was in discussing the process she went through to get there. 5y
pigeonsandcrows My impression was that she gets off the drugs and "wakes up", maybe not in an entirely pleasant way. I thought the last chapter tied her "awakening " to the kind of new awareness people in the US had after 9/11. 5y
pigeonsandcrows @thewallflower0707 I just realized I didn't tag and reply to you so I'm not sure you ever saw I responded. Sorry, I'm still quite new to this! 5y

#bookmail 👏👏👏 I‘m so excited for both of these, and I‘m pretty sure the tagged book will be my next read once I finish Les Mis. I also got the books for #MyFavoritePoetSwap and will be sending my package out next week 👍

@Cinfhen I‘m all set for the #HELLoween party 👻

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve heard much good things about the tagged book 🙂👍 5y
Cinfhen Yes @erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve also seen great reviews on that #ManBookerShortList (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB I so hope you‘ll love The Long Take 🤞 5y
Kalalalatja @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen me too, especially @BarbaraBB ‘s review made me really excited! 👌 5y
Cinfhen It‘s not even available in the US until November so I may have to pick up a UK edition 5y

The #manbookershortlist is here!! I didn‘t quite get through the whole long list but I did read all these ones.

It‘s pretty close to what I would have picked actually! I‘d have swapped out the mars room for Normal People (which I can‘t believe isn‘t here), but I‘m happy other than that. What do you think??

#manbooker2018

JenniferP I don‘t make an effort to read all the nominees but I did read and enjoy The Overstory and am not surprised it made the list. I‘d also like to read Washington Black sometime. (edited) 6y
BarbaraBB I am not happy at all. Only two of my favorites made it to the shortlist. Two others I didn‘t like at all and the remaining two I haven‘t read and I don‘t appeal to me. So that‘s how I feel 😕 6y
Simona @BarbaraBB I‘m quite happy with the shortlist. All three my favorites are shortlisted, and others three - I simply ignore them 😘 6y

BookwormM I read the whole list and think these deserve their place although I only predicted 4 of them 6y
Emilymdxn @JenniferP the overstory was my absolute favourite! 6y
Emilymdxn Sorry to hear that @BarbaraBB which ones were your faves? (edited) 6y
Emilymdxn @Simona ooh which ones are you ignoring? 6y
Emilymdxn @BookwormM ooh which ones???? I‘m so nosy about what everyone thinks 6y
BarbaraBB The Long Take is my fav. I also liked Everything Under. 6y
Simona Washington Black, Everything Under and Mars Room. 🤷‍♀️😘 6y
BookwormM I predicted The Overstory, The Long Take, Everything Under, Warlight, The Mars Room and In our Mad and Furious City 6y

Finished!
An enjoyable slog. Admirable, ambitious and probably the longest book I've ever read. I did have a little skim now and again (e.g. baseball). I'm sure I do that more when I read on kindle!
So 4 of the 6 #manbookershortlist read! I'm hoping one I haven't read yet - Autumn - wins.

Cathythoughts Well done 👍 6y
Leniverse Well done on getting through that! But why are you hoping for a book you haven't read yet to win? 6y
jhod @Leniverse Because based on the author and synopsis I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it! @Cathythoughts thanks :-) 6y

Ms_T Well done! I‘ve been listening to this on audio and should finish it today. It‘s certainly been a commitment but I‘ve loved it. 6y
jhod @Ms_T thanks, and to you! Some chapters I loved, the final one is great - enjoy! 6y
ClairesReads I just got my copy of this, but think it might have to wait a bit until I have the headspace to process it! 6y
jhod @ClairesReads I read it over quite a long time - probably over a month, which worked for me. But I wasn't obsessed about having every detail of the four different threads clear in my head! 6y
BarbaraBB Another pick. I keep postponing this one but if it wins tonight I‘ll have to 😉 6y

Friday #bookmail from Book Depository and Tin House 😍📭📚#manbookershortlist

LeahBergen Wow. Great haul. 7y
ReadingEnvy I still need to finish the Mozley but i think thats the only one on the shortlist? 7y
Hoopiefoot @ReadingEnvy It is, but I slapped the tag on it since it's also the book I'm reading at the moment 😀 7y
ReadingEnvy @Hoopiefoot I had a weird reading synergy experience between Solar Bones and Reservoir 13 so I'll look forward to your thoughts! 7y

I guess I have to read the Auster now. The others I did read. I am not too happy about the result... I am missing some personal favourites! #manbookershortlist

Abailliekaras Oh wow I didn't realise it was out! Interesting ..... 7y
Abailliekaras Ps I'm not rushing to read the Auster, let me know if you do and what you think. 7y
Cinfhen Ahhh, I was waiting! Interesting selections. Which book were u hoping to see that wasn't listed?!? 7y
See All 21 Comments
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I loved Home Fire, Reservoir 13 and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, all of which didn't make it! 7y
Cinfhen I've read 2 and still own & have to read 7y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I think that'll be this year's winner! But I am usually wrong 😉 7y
Cinfhen From this list I agree...which means I should bump it up my TBR 7y
quietlycuriouskate I haven't read *any* of them yet because I'm waiting on Overdrive. (But maybe those not shortlisted will come round more quickly now.) 7y
susanw I've only read Lincoln in the Bardo, but I'm starting the Fridland today, and own most of the others. 7y
BarbaraBB @susanw Lots of good reading ahead in any case. I read them all, except for the Auster. 7y
merelybookish Ive read 3/6. Not sure I can bring myself to read the Auster... 7y
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I am not looking forward to it either, although I always like Auster. This one doesn't appeal somehow. 7y
Reviewsbylola The only one I've read is Exit West and I hated it. 7y
Kitta I was surprised too, I was sure the Arubdhati Roy would win. 7y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Oh really? Most of the times we do like the same books, but I liked Exit West a lot. 7y
BarbaraBB @Kitta It should have been at least shortlisted, I agree! 7y
Reviewsbylola The fantasy elements threw me off and I didn't care for his writing style either. I would have bailed if it hadn't been so short. 7y
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola I loved that one. And his style. I wonder what you would think of that one! 7y
Reviewsbylola No I haven't read that. I'm a little hesitant because I wonder if I just don't like his style. 7y

On Wednesday, the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize will be announced. This is my forecast of the books that I expect (and hope) will be shortlisted.

(I know, no Underground Railroad, I am doubting, but I think maybe its momentum has passed)

I'd be interested in anyone else's forecast!

#manbookerreadalong #manbooker #manbookerprize #bookerprize #manbookershortlist #shortlist

AnneCecilie Have you read the entre long list? 7y
MicheleinPhilly I would bet on Sebastian Barry making the short list. I have not read it but he seems to be a perennial Man Booker favorite. 7y
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie No, I haven't read Paul Auster and Zadie Smith, but these six are so good I dare take the risk 😀! 7y
See All 14 Comments
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly You might be right, he is always a favourite and Days Without End is really good as well. 7y
Simona I think you are quite near ... only without Exit West 😉 7y
BarbaraBB @Simona Instead of the Hamid, which one will it be 😀? 7y
Redheadrambles I think that is probably a pretty good forecast 😀. Even though as you say it's time maybe past I liked The Underground Railroad a lot more than Exit West. But I also think it's a tough road for an American to win again this year ;) 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles Do you really think so? Oh you're probably right. I am being naive, politics are everywhere... 7y
vivastory I loved Underground Railroad, but I don't see it winning the Man Booker. 7y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB well I would hope they will decide on merit of course ! But it caused a little heated debate widening the field to include non commonwealth countries in the first place, so there maybe some discontent if an American takes it out each year. However, I say let the chips fall where they may. Well shall see soon enough 😀 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles I remember the debate indeed, but I do hope we are past that. Let's wait and see! 7y
Simona Solar Bones or 4321 😉 7y
BarbaraBB @Simona Don't let it be Solar Bones 😀! The Auster I could live with. I haven't read 4321 yet but generally am a fan of his work. That would just mean a lot to read before October 17! 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles Well, 3 out of the 6 shortlisted books are American. That is a surprise! 7y
