The North China Lover | Marguerite Duras
post image
Mehso-so

first 87 pages are like nabokov‘s screenplay of Lolita. a salacious, pulp-y rendition of the original. the child running across the street and kissing the limousine window is lo pulling the lipstick tube out of her bikini waistband.

after the child‘s dance with helene lagonelle, there‘s nothing more. 150 pages of incessant laughing and crying.

Happy Birthday! on this date in 1914 Marguerite Duras was born.(1914-1996) I haven‘t read this one but her book “The Lover” blew me away. Read it years ago.

The Malady of Death | Marguerite Duras

My uncle gave me a few dozen books he was getting rid of, and this one seemed like a quick read, especially since I want to read more fiction in translation.

I kind of hate it a little? I don't know. I definitely did not enjoy myself. The prose was weird and vague, and I definitely think a lot of the intent was lost in translation. It also got rapey and murdery in a way that was not enjoyable for me. I don't know. Not for me.
