#traveltuesday • apparently not nearly as acclaimed as The Dud Avocado (somewhat based on the author‘s life) but always my favorite of the two by far. Again, I read this gem at least 3 or 4 times in my early 20s • to me, Honey Flood (“if that‘s her real name”) was a gutsier version of Edith Wharton‘s “Summer” protagonist Charity Royall, both of whom I identified with at that age.

#memoirmonday #arc 😘 Read this at least 3 times between the ages of 21-23. Hands down one of my favorite memoirs. Loved the writing. Should revisit highlighted sentences soon 🤔 Otherwise I‘ve only read Envy (loved!) and a wonderful collection of short stories she selected/edited for a lit mag but keep meaning to add another Kathryn Harrison to the #tbr stack.

Ruthiella I have avoided this one due to the incest☹️ I don‘t think I can handle that. 6y

#coolcover for May‘s #readingresolutions #photochallenge 🌺 Read this in high school but plan on reading it again. Will add to my stack once I have.

Traci1 I love this cover. My copy is brown and boring. 6y
gregspuches @Traci1 although I love this cover, couldn‘t we agree a boring, brown cover somehow suits the moral of the story better? 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 6y
Traci1 @gregspuches lol, true. I still love those birds. 😊 6y

May‘s #TBR #readingresolutions • Well into the tagged book and 🧡 it. The two Anita Brookner novels I pulled off the shelves at home and was surprised to find I got halfway through both - must‘ve been years ago. The Doris Lessing has been on my list for a while, while Lisa See has only recently come to my attention and I thought Snow Flower would be the perfect first read. Eileen Chang‘s also been sitting on the shelf too long 😊 #photochallenge

Was able to squeeze in 4 novels (plus some poetry and art magazines here and there) and start a 5th between work, school and a couple vacations in April. Tagged my favorite book of the month. Looking forward to May‘s challenges 📚🐛🤗

DivineDiana Prodigal Summer has been on my TBR for some time. Just pulled it out and hoping to read during the warm weather. (edited) 6y
gregspuches @DivineDiana so funny because it was cold and rainy in CT while I read it and I was surprised to keep remembering that summer is COMING 😂 Felt like I was inside this book the entire time. 6y

Rainy day vibes. More coffee brewing. In love with this book. Writing style reminds me of Marguerite Duras a bit.

Day 25: #beachread ??? Françoise Sagan‘s first brilliant novel, written in her teens.

“Sometimes I think I would blame myself less if I had been prompted that day by hatred and violence, and had not allowed myself to drift into it merely through inertia, the sun, and Cyril‘s kisses.” - p77

Asked my boyfriend (photographed as a toddler in the cute little denim jacket frame he found at his parents‘ house) which of these from my small #tbr stack on one of our bookshelves I should read next, and am happy to report he chose what I was hoping for 🤗 Can‘t wait to dive in tomorrow morning before work!

Pickpick

Finished this quick and thought-provoking tale of innocence lost over the Atlantic on my flight home. Coincidentally a great little beach read (only 102 pages) if you‘re in the mood for something a little more subtle yet intense at the same time. Excited to read a third Alberto Moravia novel someday. Highly recommend Boredom as well which I read in 2012.

Ruthiella Have you read The Mare? How does it compare to Gaitskill‘s other works? 6y

I bet Toby here would relate to Mary Oliver.

“...
Inside the bright fields,

touched by their rough and spongy gold,
I am washed and washed
in the river
of earthly delight—

and what are you going to do—
what can you do
about it—
deep, blue night?”

Day 11: Dino‘s #misunderstood for sure, first by himself 🤷🏻‍♂️ then it‘s hard to say whether even more so by everyone else, & then only if because he so misunderstands them 🤔 Still, the biggest misunderstanding of all are his convictions about young Cecilia, changing & overtaking him throughout.

Not to worry! Ultimately leads to a certain semblance of something vital understood in the end 🌳

So begins my fourth Françoise Sagan novel. Hard to say whether That Mad Ache or Bonjour Tristesse was my favorite - not to say A Certain Smile wasn‘t just as expertly written - but nonetheless, high hopes for this quick read!

Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver
Pickpick

Only complaint about this novel is that it ended. Will be thinking about these lovable and inspiring characters for a long time and all that may have happened afterward. Beautiful use of nature, and again Barbara stresses the significance of flora and fauna without preaching. Wish it was at least twice as long. Highly recommend. Not a wasted word in this captivating read.
