The Hungering Dark | Frederick Buechner
post image
Pickpick

I didn‘t realize how appropriate this would be to read during December. It may partly be reading it during this season, but Buechner‘s reflections here all seem to center on and circle around the Christmas story—and on Christ—moving through themes of darkness and light, doubt and faith. Buechner‘s writing is gorgeous as always, and the prayers that conclude each chapter are especially rich & meaningful. This was my November #DoubleSpin. ⤵️

BarbaraJean This was also intended to be my pick for a #50x50 prompt—a book published before I turned 10 (between 1978 and 1987). StoryGraph lists it as having been published in 1985, but my copy shows it was first published in 1969… which is *technically* before I turned 10, but it‘s also before I was born 😆 I‘ll decide later whether I want to read something different to fulfill this prompt! 2d
TheAromaofBooks Lovely review!! It can be so aggravating trying to find actual original publication dates! 1d

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Thank you! StoryGraph usually gets it right... just not this time 😩
@julieclair I'm not, but my mom was! This is one of hers 😌

TheAromaofBooks Also, side note, am I supposed to be starting a Kindred Spirits book? I can't remember what we decided to do after the Christmas stories, or if we decided at all 😂 1d
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Sunday we start Marigold! I need to post a schedule. In the aftermath of Christmas, out of town relatives leaving, New Year‘s, and in-town relatives returning… my mind has been chaos for the past week 😆 Schedule coming right up! 22h
TheAromaofBooks Absolutely no pressure. I just literally was like... I think we had a plan, but I don't remember it 😂 11h

It was more of the same of “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” which I loved. My opinion: I couldn‘t get into everything being called a “God”. I will take it to the Used Book store on my trip soon for someone who may enjoy it.

My early morning contemplation/meditation/prayer time - theme advent. I dwell in the 5:00 am quiet of the house. Of course, with coffee! ☕️📚 🙏🏻 #contemplation #advent #coffeesndbooks

A little watermelon, cheese, wine while reflecting on my zany day. Emmy has joined me.

Today‘s reading is a poem ofJane Kenyon‘s
Mosaic of the Nativity: Serbia, Winter, 1993. Her words juxtapose the birth of Christ and the Bosnian War.

A day home.Snow/freezing rain expected.I was surprised! I have to laugh when I think of all of you in states with heavy snowfall, because today we expect 3-4 inches.Snow supposed to start falling at 10:00. We have no walkers in our district due to lack of sidewalks. Thus, it becomes a busing issue & at times the bus company‘s call. No complaints here; I woke at the same time I always do.It‘s been quiet, contemplative.☕️📚🙏🏻

Bookwormjillk I love your mug! Enjoy the day.

We were hoping for a 2 hour delay here, but all we got was rain. But it's ok- first day after Thanksgiving break I think they were secretly happy to go back.

kspenmoll @Bookwormjillk I plan to enjoy this gift of a day! 1mo
Amiable I‘m working from home today. It‘s not heavy snow that bothers me —as a native New Englander, I can drive in that. It‘s the icy rain/sleet mix that keeps my butt in the house. Nope. Not going to get on I-95 if there‘s a chance of slick roads. People already drive like idiots on that highway in good weather. 😖 1mo

This is a beautiful collection of poems inspired and influenced by Maya Angelou's faith and love for humanity, and listening to her read them is a joy. Amazing Peace is such a gorgeous, moving poem to listen to at Christmas. (and I have to say, I wasn't expecting eulogies to Luther Vandross and Barry White.)
