Look what my Valentine found for me-a Maya Angelou quarter! I just heard about this last week. It‘s the first in the new American Women Quarters series celebrating diverse and pioneering women who impacted our country. On this coin, Maya has her arms lifted with a rising sun and a bird in flight—all symbolic images inspired by her poetry. What an honor for such an amazing & inspiring author!

pickMaya shares poems of celebration and even sings a few songs that inspired the poems. I remember when she spoke at Clinton‘s inauguration, and it was good to hear that again. Other poems celebrate people like Oprah and events like the Million Man March. #AuthorAMonth
pickThis is wonderful to listen to, especially so it‘s narrated by the author. A collection of 12 poems, some moving, all wise words. ‘A Brave and Startling Truth‘ and ‘Mother, A Cradle to Hold Me‘ are my favourites.

pickI listened to this collection read by the author. It was a real treat! It reminded me of listening to her read her work on public tv when I was a kid. I love her voice. In the intro you even get to hear her sing a few lines from spirituals that she cites as inspirations. This collection includes her inaugural poem, poems dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the UN, to Oprah‘s birthday & other special occasions. Most aren‘t printed elsewhere.

Personal update: I finally took my professional certification exam and PASSED. With a 67% pass rate I was very nervous 😬
After a year of studying I‘m so relieved its over and now I can rightfully dedicate my free time to leisure reading - not studying legal precedents and motivation theories 🙃

I didn't finish my Marlowe book in March (somehow knew that would happen...) so need to catch up on #poetrychallenge2018
Maya Angelou seemed a fitting choice with her birthday this week, and the library had this audiobook. Very beautiful--I've a new appreciation for occasional poetry. I'd never read Angelou (I know) before. I will read more, for sure, but at least now I've read some.
