The Mysterious Benedict Society
The Mysterious Benedict Society | Trenton Lee Stewart
Dozens of children respond to this peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children-two boys and two girls-succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.

This was the perfect road trip book with my daughter! We particularly loved the first few chapters which introduced the characters. A secret society of clever children who tackle saving the world? Sign me up! It was such a fun adventure. It's a bit like Lemony Snicket, but with a lot more heart.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is a clever tale of gifted children embarking on a mission to save the world. It encourages critical thinking, teamwork, and the value of individual talents. I would definitely use this in the classroom because it promotes discussions on problem-solving and collaboration

I'm leaning towards the tagged book but we'll see-I may end up in the mood for a classic or a sea journey by the time I get to reading my book.

Cute middle grade book. I liked the adventure and the story but it dragged on a little too long for me in parts. It just seemed to take awhile to get anywhere. I liked the characters a lot and thought the premise was interesting and fun!

MelanieSolane This is my favorite book!! Nice to see other people reading it and thinking about it🤔😁😁 2y
Victoriahoperose @MelanieSolane it was super cute. I hope we get a movie adaptation or show some day because I would really love to see the characters come to life! 2y
MelanieSolane @Victoriahoperose that would be super cool indeed! I already searched for something like that because this book suits so well for a movie adaptation so I was actually surprised that there wasn't already an adaptation. 2y
MelanieSolane @Victoriahoperose on the other hand I find it often a bit 'scary' to watch a movie adaptation because I have the characters in my head in a very specific way so I hope that if there will be a movie, it will match my imagination 😅 2y
Victoriahoperose @MelanieSolane so true!!! ❤️❤️❤️ 2y

A delightful, old fashioned type of children's story about plucky orphans each with their own set of skills to use to fight evil! Very funny and moving. I love the message to respect children and honour their intelligence and bravery. Constance was my favourite.

Wonderfully read as an #audiobook by Del Roy.

Thoroughly entertaining. A review suggested this is a mix of Dahl and Dickens, with more of Dahl‘s whimsy than the Lemony Snicket series. An apt description.
There are brilliant orphans and truly evil villains but also much humour, heroics and triumphs along the way. I am hoping that is where it differs from Lemony Snicket - all might just come right in the end!
A long read for Trix but we have eagerly ordered book 2.

What an excellent caper! The kids were charming and complex, the mystery was just the right amount of twisty, and the language was a delight. The most sinister part was, of course, that the idea of subliminal messaging is completely believable and something we already live with in advertising and media. I would have loved this book as a kid and enjoyed it as an adult. I‘ll be interested to see how the televised version holds up…

I know so many people have read this book and I am bit late to the party!
Mystery books aren‘t my thing but I actually really enjoyed this.
A great cast of characters, puzzles to solve and mysteries to unfold.
It reminded me of old fashioned children‘s story telling and had a real elegance to it.
This book was definitely a mixture of kid power, an evil villain and quirky in nature.

Well, I had been on the hold list for the audiobook of this for over a year, and there are 112 people in it after me - so I definitely took my chance to finally hear this story! Definitely enjoyable, I loved the cast of characters, Kate is clearly my favorite. Definitely belongs in that tradition of books about kids with no parents who team up and solve mysteries. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1️⃣ Beth from Little Women. I would have liked to see what she could have accomplished.
2️⃣ Too many to list but recently the endings from: The Boy at the back of the class and Battle of the Beetles
3️⃣ This isn‘t my normal genre of choice but I‘m intrigued to find put what happens further in the book.

I finished it! This was probably not the right time for me to read it, though. I wanted to love this book after hearing about it for years, and I can still see why so many do, especially kids who are used to being the smart ones (and often the lonely ones) at school. I adored many of the characters, and would have liked this a lot as an 11 year old, I think. But as an adult it was just. so. long. #middlegrade #kidlit #notforme

TracyReadsBooks My YA focused book group read it, we try to do at least on MG book a year, and to a one we all agreed it was too long and could have benefited from more editing. That being said, it‘s very popular with students. 🤷‍♀️ 5y

I‘ve been avoiding this book (by which I mean, not carrying it around with me as I move from floor to floor). I finally picked it up this evening and read about 80 pages. The story is picking up, but I still resent how long it is. Almost 500 pages in #middlegrade is just not necessary.

BiblioLitten How was the book? 5y
emtobiasz @BiblioLitten I‘m about 150 pages in (out of almost 500 😑) and so far it‘s heavier on the adventures and lighter on the puzzles than I was hoping. I know many readers who love these long middle grade reads, but I‘m a fan of briefer fare myself, so I‘m a bit burned out on it, but still hoping to finish. 5y

The children in the story kept me laughing and the villains we're creepy. I am happy I waited so long to read it because all of the books are out now I believe so I will be able to continue on with the story I hope the other characters from this book show up in the books to come in this series.
