The Mysterious Benedict Society
The Mysterious Benedict Society | Trenton Lee Stewart
Dozens of children respond to this peculiar ad in the newspaper and are then put through a series of mind-bending tests, which readers take along with them. Only four children-two boys and two girls-succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules. But what they'll find in the hidden underground tunnels of the school is more than your average school supplies. So, if you're gifted, creative, or happen to know Morse Code, they could probably use your help.

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is a piece of modern fantasy. It was written in 2017. In this story there is an ad asking for gifted children who are looking for special opportunities. This ad attracts a lot of people, but only two boys and two girls are chosen for a secret mission into the hidden tunnels. Within this program the only rule is that there are no rules. Just from the snippet I read it really pulled me in.

I would use this book in my classroom because it inspires children to use their imagination and creativity about having magical powers.

The Mysterious Benedict Society written by Trenton Lee Stewart. Chapter 1 p.1-28. This is a series of books about a group of children who have unique powers and gifts. These children are recruited by Mr. Benedict, who suffers from narcolepsy. Mr. Benedict sends these kids to a school to learn about evil tricks to take over the world. I would classify this book as Magical Powers because of the kids who have powers and science fiction.

Good Morning Littens!

Final #24B4Monday stats, about 22 hours.

Finished 2 books. Made progress, started new books and rereads.

Best part, my kids joining in on Sunday with a read aloud session - we each grabbed a book and took turns to read one chapter. Favourite book is tagged.

I could so do a #24B4August right now 😁😁😁

Thanks for another wonderful #readathon @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @jb72.

Mehso-so

I finished this one during a hot day in my flat under the roof today. I can't deal with this heat... 😭😭😭
So I sat on the ground in my library, which is the coolest room in the whole flat.
This book was first a pick, which turned into a so-so while I read the book.
The book itself was pretty nice, it's about some kids, who try to stop an evil adult, but at some parts the book was too nerving and too condescended to the reader... 🤪

LiljaPleasant I really liked the book. Have the second book on my tbr pile. 😁 5mo

It‘s Sunday and I thought I‘d open a discussion thread for our #buddyread of The Mysterious Benedict Society. Soooo, how did you enjoy the first twenty chapters?? :)

Sarah83 They are really great even if I expected something completely different 😂🤩 6mo
scripturient I like the story but I have to say it‘s not totally blowing me away. It reminds me of Roald Dahl and also the Mister Lemoncello books but I‘m somehow missing the awesomeness of these. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oh, and Constance is driving me insane!!! She reminds me of a former, very obnoxious colleague (both in character and appearance) and I‘m loathing her with a passion. 🤣🤣 (edited) 6mo
Sarah83 I think, it is often the problem, that many books are quite similar and you get the impression, that one author read the other author's book and made his own thing of it. There aren't so many good individual stories, that doesn't remind us... The book reminds me for example of 'the Incredibles' by Disney. 😂 6mo
ruskigurl16 @scripturient Constance, Constance, Constance. Ugh. But this is book one, so... 😉🤐 6mo
wordslinger42 I'm really loving the story! Constance definitely has her moments, but I'm reserving judgment until more of her story is revealed 😁 6mo

Using the last daylight to start my buddyread section for today. 🤩 I already read my secret garden section and I started another book... 😕 How many books can one person read at one time?
How many books do you read at once?
Besides it's of course #fridayreads

wanderinglynn I normally have 3 going at a time: (1) physical, (2) e-book, & (3) audiobook. Sometimes I might have 2 physical books, but I prefer to finish one before starting another. 6mo
charl08 Depends what you mean by "reading": I always have lots that I've started, and might go back to! 6mo
Caterina I currently have around 16 books going I think? Wait, maybe 17... But they're all different! 😂 I keep a range of audiobooks, Kindle books, physical books, and at least one Serial Reader book on my phone going at all times. They range from nonfiction (from history to theology to memoir) to poetry, short stories, and other fiction. That way I always have the perfect book for a mood. 😊 I visit each one at least every 2 days. 6mo
See All 10 Comments
Crazeedi I used to do one at a time...now I have a basket with 8 or 10 I started, and really want to finish...and an ebook...and a physical book. I really dont like doing this but #blameitonlitsy, LOL😉💞 6mo
Crazeedi And I have to get a couple audiobooks to start with the #BFC challenge!! 6mo
BarbaraJean I usually have at least 3 or 4 in progress at any given time, and often up to 7 or 8! One audiobook, one nonfiction, one fiction, and lately one poetry as well. Then any “required” reading for book clubs and buddy reads, and this year I‘ve had assigned reading for a class at church, so it‘s gotten a little more out of control than normal! 6mo
batsy I used to be one book at a time reader, but with digital books it became more like two or three. Most always there's one in print and one digital book going at the same time :) 6mo
twohectobooks For me I like to have two going at a time. Sometimes I get impatient to start new things and end up with three or four but that always stresses me out so I try not to let myself do it. 6mo
wordslinger42 I'm usually reading 4 or 5 at a time! I'm a mood reader, so I like being able to go back & forth between books, depending on what sounds good at the time! 6mo
rubyslippersreads I usually have two or three going at once, sometimes more. My mom used to say that was the sign of a true bookworm. 😄 6mo

This is a fun middle grade novel about a group of gifted children who are recruited by a man named Mr. Benedict through a series of puzzles and tests. Most synopses stop there but the bulk of the book is their mission to foil an evil plot. I enjoyed the book and liked the characters but the whole time I was reading I couldn‘t help thinking how LONG this is compared to typical middle grade.

TheAromaofBooks This is definitely one of my faves. I enjoyed the rest of the series as well 6mo
