A Malaysian folk tale comes to life in this emotionally layered, chilling middle grade debut, perfect for fans of The Book of Boy and The Jumbies. I am a dark spirit, the ghost announced grandly. I am your inheritance, your grandmothers legacy. I am yours to command. Suraya is delighted when her witch grandmother gifts her a pelesit. She names her ghostly companion Pink, and the two quickly become inseparable. But Suraya doesnt know that pelesits have a dark sideand when Pinks shadows threaten to consume them both, they must find enough light to survive . . . before they are both lost to the darkness. Fans of Holly Blacks Doll Bones and Tahereh Mafis Furthermore series will love this ghostly middle grade debut that explores jealousy, love, and the extraordinary power of friendship.

5/5 ⭐️s
I loved how unique this book was and the serious themes it addresses, such as toxic relationships, abuse, and abandonment. Easily the darkest MG book I have read. I thought the ending was brilliant - it really enforced that toxic relationships need to end, even if it's difficult and painful. I also really liked all the secondary characters.

This book is a hidden gem. Based on Malaysian folklore with a bittersweet and unique relationship at the center, I‘d definitely recommend for fairytale lovers on the hunt for something off the beaten path.

A great story following a Muslim Malay girl who has a Pelesit (a ghost) attached to her. The story does a good job tackling subjects such as the strain of friendships, toxic family, jealousy and loneliness. The creepy factor is also really well done!

A girl inherits a Malaysian ghost from her grandmother, but his antics and bullying of others begin to cause tension, especially when Saraya makes a friend of her own for the first time and Pink gets jealous. This was a really excellent ghost story that was just the right amount of dark while also being very much about friendship and family. And I loved that the ghost was one of the main POV characters.

New Kid on the Book The cover of this is so mysterious! 2y

I enjoyed my #audiowalk with this book. The weather was apt for this story as it begin with stormy clouds, drizzles, sunshine & a rainbow. Same way this story unfolded. At places it‘s too dark & spooky. I like how bullying is explained, when & how to seek help. MC meets a ghost & the changes that followed is unexpected. It‘s my first try with the genre. I enjoyed this book. 3.5 🌟#BFC2 #bookspinbingo #teamHendrix +15pts 6hrs #scarathlon2021

This took me a bit to get into because I didn‘t love the audiobook narrator. However, I‘m a sucker for folklore and retellings, and this is a middle grade ghost story based on Malaysian folklore. It‘s also a warm tale of friendship and family. I found myself laughing and crying - signs of a good book! #readingasia2021 #malaysia

Librarybelle Good signs indeed! 3y

Spooky middle grade fiction set in Malaysia. A lonely Muslim girl grows up with a hereditary demon-ghost as a best friend. Issue of bullying is handled well: the girl refuses to allow her ghost to retaliate against bullies because she doesn‘t want to be like them. When the girl gets a human friend, things don‘t go well with the jealous ghost. Malay syntax sounds great in #audiobook format with narrator Mirai Booth-Ong. #ownvoices

lahousewyfe Nice yoke! And I love the colors. ❤️ 3y
Lindy @lahousewyfe Thanks. The purple yarn was purchased, & the other colours I dyed myself (with avocado, madder, dandelion & spruce). 3y
lahousewyfe @Lindy That's so cool. I've done some spinning, but never dying. And with natural materials? Love it! 3y
Lindy @lahousewyfe Since I had to stay home instead of travelling in 2020, I devoted a lot of time to learning about dye colour possibilities in my garden. And hands-on experiments. 😊 3y

Here are my options for #screamathon2020 hosted by @4thhouseontheleft . It‘s low key, read any spooky, suspenseful, scary or down right terrifying books in October. Just read at your own pace, use the hashtag and tag the host. I won‘t be able to read all of these, but am exciting start!
