so-soFirst buddy-read with my kiddo in awhile, first since middle school for sure. I think I enjoyed her excitement more than my own. I picked up on some foreshadowing she didn't so watching her get upset with characters and/or disagreeing with their actions was superior to my own read.

pickFantastic start to a series! I loved every minute of Amari‘s journey into this supernatural world to find her brother. I honestly did not see the reveal at the end coming. Im so excited to start the next book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

pickVentured into the children‘s section for this because my cousins loved it, and so did I! I guess another trope I like is “magic kids going to magic school/camp.” Amari uncovers a whole new reality when she receives a message from her missing brother. The supernatural world is real, she‘s a magician, and magicians are illegal. Prejudice is nothing new to Amari, but she has to fight a whole lot of it in order to be accepted and find her brother.
pickA much-belated review of this #AuldLangSpine pick from @Karisimo ! This was a delight. The Harry Potter vibes were strong here, if Hogwarts were a summer program in the US, with better diversity. I loved getting to know Amari as she navigated a newly-discovered magical world, discovered new friends and enemies, and worked to uncover the truth behind her brother‘s disappearance. I‘m looking forward to the next installment! #SeriesLove2023

pickPicked this one up after hearing some good things - wanted to check it out before possibly getting it for my niece for Christmas. So glad I did because I loved it! Fantastic world-building, fun plot, and characters that feel like they could step right off the page. I definitely need to get my hands on the next book.
pickThis book was awesome. Best middle grade fantasy I‘ve read. I was into every twist and turn (though not so much the illustrations) and totally did not expect all of the plot twist at the end. 5🌟

I made this drawing of a passage from the book Amari and the Night Brothers from B. B. Alston. I loved the passage in which Agent Fiona empowers Amari. It really feels like a switch in the mindset of the main character. 🥺🙈
pickI just finished bingeing this book. I wasn't sure if I would like it because of Amari telling the story from her perspective but after a while it felt natural to connect to the story in that way.
Near the end of the book, I felt like a lot was still to happen. The story had a nice pace and took me by the hand but I felt like the ending could have been longer to deepen the ending.
Still, I loved this book and its semi open ending.
Would recommend!
so-soI didn‘t love this book. Heard about it from The Currently Reading podcast. I don‘t read a lot of middle grade so I wanted to give this a try. Borrowed the digital copy from my library.

Amari‘s brother Quentin is missing and she just got expelled from school. A new summer “leadership” program provides an entry to a surprising supernatural world. Amari must find her place in it.
It‘s a middle grade book - probably a little too advanced for an 8 yr old? 🤷🏾♀️ But it‘s still a good read-aloud story.

pickWhat a book. Def agree with it feeling of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. Amari only wants to find her missing brother. I really liked the trials the bureau puts the special agent trainees into. Amari was very creative. Also made a good point about where she came from. The final twists had me going. This was a hard book to put down at any point. It just kept going.
@Amandajoy He‘s been begging to open his #BlitsySwap package non-stop since yesterday & within 5 minutes of opening everything asked if he can do the swap again next year! He loved everything but the hands-down winner was the Lego book light. He uses them all the time and we can never have enough around the house. Looking forward to reading the books together. I loved Amari and can‘t wait for him to read it too! BTW, C did a great wrapping job!!

pickHarry Potter meets Men in Black in this middle grade science fantasy starring a girl whose search for her missing all-star older brother lands her in training as a junior agent in the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, where she must discover much about herself, her abilities, and the magical world in order to uncover what happened to her brother. I enjoyed this but it didn‘t blow me away—I think I just don‘t care for the special agent stuff 😬

What a fun story!! I saw the big plot twist coming from a mile away, but it was still an exciting journey to get there. I've got some specific students in mind who I think will really enjoy this one!

Do you ever feel guilty for reading? I think this is why I‘ve been such a slow reader for years now. I used to devour books, but anymore, I feel guilty. I know I should be studying, or cleaning, or doing something productive, but I really want to just read this book (so good!). My husband told me to take advantage (no homework) and do some reading. Love that man 🥰 (sorry… I was just curious if anyone else ever felt that way)

I bought a copy of this book earlier in the week because it is one of my favorite middle grade reads of the year, plus we're reading next month it for the tween/teen book club I run at the library and I wanted my own copy to take notes for our discussion!
