The River We Remember: A Novel | William Kent Krueger

Mehso-so

Not my first WKK book and likely won't be my last but I do think editing wasn't a priority for this, and as a reader of history, and random knowledge that sticks in my head some parts of the story simply don't work for a 1958 setting. For me, that overshadowed the story and consumed my thoughts, unfortunately. This book gave me Beartown (Backman) & The Lost Man (Harper) vibes but in an American setting instead of Sweden & Australia respectively.

Save the date, #BetsyTacy fans! The next Betsy-Tacy Convention will be held this year in Mankato, MN in honor of the birthday girl, Deep Valley's Emily Webster! More information to come on speakers, workshops, and activities, but rest assured- if you've never visited Betsy's house, sat on the famous bench, or gallivanted around Lincoln Park (”that pie-shaped wedge!") - you don't want to miss this chance. #BetsyTacyAndTib #MaudHartLovelace

LeahBergen Wonderful! I visited for the first time last summer. 🥰 2w

LeahBergen It was SO much fun. There was a terrifying moment when I discovered the house museums would be closed on the weekend I was there but I contacted them and ended up getting a private tour (with some other people who showed up, too). Phew! And I also managed to do some damage in the little gift shop. 😆😆 2w
Andrea313 @LeahBergen Amazing!!!! I'm so glad someone was able to come through and give the tour! ❤️ 2w
MaureenMc My daughter and I are going to try to make it! We were just talking about it again over the weekend. 🤞🤞 2w

#12booksof2024 My first time reading this author. The writing was excellent. It had some flaws with regard to the mystery plot, but on the whole I enjoyed it. The characters were engaging and vivid, and the setting was immersive - a compelling portrait of 1960s small town Minnesota. Read with my IRL book club.

Another Christmas break read in the longer series of Corcoran O‘Connor. I enjoyed this one like I do the others. It had its familiar parts and its own storyline too. I continue to enjoy the character development and general stories. I‘m sure I will continue along in the series.

My second Christmas break book and 13th in this series. It continued the story of Cork O‘Connor as he figures out mysteries in the far northern part of Minnesota. I enjoy the stories and the break from school.

One of the real joys of reading this series is the attention Krueger pays to characters. The lead, Cork O‘Conner is fantastic but so too is his family which features prominently in all of these books. Never more so than in this one which has Cork trying to solve a murder & the same time one of his children is navigating a difficult decision. Another excellent installment which shows how complex it is to be human & care for others.

Pickpick

A delightful, charming book about a man who has an accident that upends his life, which compels Virgil to forge a new and circuitous path to a changed existence. It all takes place in a small dying midwestern town with several endearing quirky characters. It‘s funny and hopeful. Engaging, entertaining, old fashioned storytelling.
