The River We Remember: A Novel | William Kent Krueger

Attended a fantastic author talk this evening with a friend. It featured William Kent Krueger talking about his tagged book which was selected for the local One Book One Community read this year.

I haven‘t had a chance to read this book yet, but his talk was wonderful. He also discussed his writing process and the power of stories. If you like his books and have the opportunity to see him speak in person I highly recommend it.

A murder mystery provides the framework for this painfully realistic portrait of mid-20th-Century life in small town middle America. Riveting.

This series is my happy reading place right now. These books are impossible to put down. Krueger is masterful at building tension, at putting his characters in high stakes situations where not everyone makes it out while those that do, more often than not, do so in believable ways. As always, the mystery itself is compelling but it is the characters themselves that keep you turning the pages. Another really good book in the Cork O‘Conner series.

Anna40 Which of his books would you say should someone new to the author start with? 1w
TracyReadsBooks @Anna40 sorry for my tardy response! I‘ve read the series in order from the beginning which I‘ve really enjoyed because of the development of the recurring characters from book to book. That being said, the first book is good but not my favorite so if you start there, I‘d read a couple of more to get a real sense of the series. If you just want to see what the series is all about, try Boundary Waters or Heaven‘s Keep. Writing is always excellent. 1w

It‘s autumn outside but it‘s the heat of July in my book. Blazing through this compelling story of the events of summer 1961 in New Bremen, Minnesota. A mystery, a coming of age tale, a historical fiction - whatever it is, I want to see where it‘s going. #hyggehourreadathon

This was an okay read.
The murder mystery was good, but I hate it when the amateur sleuth solves the murder because an entire police force is incompetent (they missed not 1 but 3 key pieces of evidence). And gosh the Halloween hayride, coffee, and Halloween doughnuts were mentioned every couple of pages!
The side plot of which of my 2 boyfriends should I do a couples costume with was also annoying 😂

Emilymdxn This sounds so annoying but also exactly like the kind of thing I‘d read 😆 2w

Our Sept. library book club pick. I prefer fast paced, psychological thrillers, so I didn‘t initially enjoy this book. But I kept going and ended up really liking it. The River is a slower paced mystery with some action but more back story than anything else. The character development in this book was in depth and fantastic. Book #91 in 2024

Another fantastic story, one which adds background & depth to some familiar (favorite) characters while introducing new characters that are easy to love:hate. The mystery is, as always, compelling—this time coming with high stakes for Cork O‘Conner. I‘m halfway through the series now & am beyond impressed with how consistently good it is, how well Krueger writes setting and, especially, characters. If you like mysteries, this series is excellent.

Eight books in & this series is as strong—and as impossible to put down—as ever. Besides always adding depth & nuance to what we know about recurring characters with each installment while always introducing fully fleshed out new characters, one of the strengths of this series is its ongoing exploration of the difference/overlap between the law and justice. Things are seldom black & white & the stories are the stronger for it. Great read.
