The narrator doesn‘t recognize herself in the woman‘s she used to be before she became a fulltime mother. It drives her mad but she‘s also madly in love with her little son Sailor. Her husband is worthless, doing nothing to share the responsibilities for their baby, he is just working and living his life. And loving her. But is it enough?

A very recognizable read about the struggles and blessings of motherhood. #womenprize

sarahbarnes You‘re doing a much better job selling me on the books on the long list this year than the organizers did. Another one I may have to try! 😁 4d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes i read just a few but (except for Hangman) they are all really good 🤷🏻‍♀️😀 4d

I can not get behind this one. This book gave me terrible ick.
The child: *breathes*
The mother: Oh my God, you are sucking the life out of me!
Seriously. I would never think these things that these mothers think about their kids. Taking care of kids is hard, of course, but fantasies about killing them is just a step too far for me. If you don't want your husband or child so bad you want to kill them... JUST LEAVE. Jesus 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1/5

1. Not my first name. My middle name is Wayne, and I'm named after my uncle on my uncle on my mother's side.
2. The obvious choice...We Need To Talk About Kevin

The MC talks to her young child as she struggles through the change in her life since giving birth to him, along with coping with a seemingly absent husband who prefers to work long hours.

I don‘t have kids so can‘t speak to the veracity of this novel but I certainly found the MC‘s stream of consciousness thoughts really stressful to read, but incredibly compelling.

Another great read from the #womensprize long list.

marleed A sister made a video for my brother‘s memorial. (My father always said he had 5 daughters each of whom had a brother🤣). Each sister requested one song be incorporated. Mine was I Know You By Heart from Eva Cassidy‘s Songbird album. 1mo

We Need To Talk About Kevin is a truly chilling read. Not horror-movie jump-scare scary, but can‘t-look-away feel-it-in-your-bones unnerving. I found myself totally gripped by it, even though the ending was a foregone conclusion. I “just-one-more-chapter”ed myself past bed-time more than once. “Insipid/idealistic portrayals of motherhood made me less interested in it as a young person. I thought it was boring when it‘s one of the most extreme socio-political experiences I have ever been through.”

All the stars for this book ✨ becoming a mother changes us physically and mentally and Jones details this using research from neuroscience, existential therapy, ecology, sociology etc. as well as drawing from her own experiences.

youneverarrived I‘m using this for #nonfiction2024 Looking for Alaska (“there is no other time in a human‘s life course that entails such dramatic change, other than adolescence”.) (edited) 1mo

In this novel our protagonist is in her mid/late 30s and trying to make a decision to whether she wants to have kids or not. And in this process she is also looking at the expectations from you friends, family and society. Because what use is a childless woman to the society? And are women with children the ones pushing childless women the most to have children as a validation of their own choices? This book gave me a lot to think about.
