Suet624 I'm so glad you received it. And I absolutely adore the drawings by the artist - he does a lot of animal drawings, but I'm most fond of his nature scenes. 2w
AmyG @Suet624 Reminds me of VT. ❤️ 2w

Rachel Cusk wrote this memoir (almost a series of essays) about becoming a mother in 2001. Cusk talks about motherhood in both an intellectual way & a personal way - theres a little humor but theres a lot of distress in here. For me it is the first book ive read that captured some of the trauma & undoing of self that i personally felt going full speed from a difficult birth into a severe lack of sleep & feelings ⬇️

Centique of failure. Cusk had a far longer stint in that hard place than me but im so glad she got the essence of these experiences down on paper. It helps me to remember that time and to empathise with anyone going through that right now. 4w

Not that it will happen, but every soon-to-be father should be required to read sections of this book. A woman explains what her life has become once she has become a mother. Her husband is busy at work and he abdicates all responsibility for the child. The exhaustion, anger, disappointment, loneliness, desperate love and raging anger toward a young child, all of it was perfectly described.

#offtheshelf

Tamra I was lucky, my husband was really great co-parenting both of our children as infants & tots. (Not that he isn‘t now, but that‘s the focus of the novel.) I have serious admiration and at times sympathy for single parents & guardians without a source of support. 4w
Suet624 @Tamra my situation is so varied. Three marriages, children every 7 years with the last two being twins. I was a single mom occasionally. My last husband was very helpful. The others, not so much. Living in a commune with my first child was VERY helpful. 4w
TheBookHippie I agree. A must read. 4w

Tamra @Suet624 I can see any arrangement with multiple responsible adults in a household with small children would be a great fortune! 4w
Suet624 @Tamra it really was the best. 4w
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. That husband though. I can‘t imagine living with and tolerate such a man 4w
Anna40 I think most men, even if they read it, would still not understand. But great review! 4w
Suet624 @Tamra I was thinking about your comment again and it made me wonder why some men are great at understanding the needs of a new mother and others aren‘t. Probably a million reasons but I‘m glad yours was on top of things. 😊 4w
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I know! And I fear it or some variation of it happens more than we like to think. 4w
Suet624 @Anna40 oh my. You might be right. 4w
Tamra @Suet624 we were way older than average and ready so that was part of it and my husband isn‘t thoughtless. 😂 4w
Suet624 @Tamra that‘s a great point about age. That‘s definitely a huge factor. (edited) 4w

Is it a #Gift if you get it for completing a reading challenge? I received this book in the mail this week & it‘s from #OnceUponABookClub for finishing their 2024 40 Book Challenge. I‘m happy to have been gifted a book I haven‘t read yet & it looks pretty good. 🤗

Thanks to our hosts @Eggs & @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for this month of prompts. I can‘t believe it is February tomorrow! 😬

Clover, stay at home mom of two young kids, is obsessed with health food and therefore grocery stores. Her anxieties are revealed to readers as we also slowly learn about her past. No spoilers here! So I won‘t get much more into the plot but it felt interesting and somewhat likely while I was reading it but looking back it‘s all very improbable. TW for domestic violence (a particular scene chilled the blood in my veins!)

A preschool teacher is killed and the kids drink blood. Who did it? Really funny and entertaining. Read for a Facebook group.
