Impossible Creatures, by Katherine Rundell (2024)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Premise: A boy gets pulled into a magical world just in time to collaborate to save it from a horrible threat.

Review: For me, this was well done but a bit of a struggle as an adult reader. The premise was very “fantasy 101”, and there were so many twists and turns that it was hard for me to keep up with the plot. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday That said, I think this speed would play better for a younger audience. It was well done and had some really interesting food for thought, but it was a wee bit of a miss for me. 1d

I don't agree that this story is a story about comfort and healing or that it is an optimistic book... I'd say it was a book about a children experiencing big, difficult emotions, facing violence, death and loss. There is darkness, and sacrifice, and tears. There is also magical creatures and friendship, ecological message, but it doesn't save the story.

If you need a YA book for your kids or for your classroom this is it. Finally in paperback. Mal the flying girl and Christopher the future guardian of the mythical creatures. Artwork throughout and a glossary of the creatures. Recommended on the back for 10 and above…agree. Book 1. Fun read for anyone who reads fantasy.

TheLudicReader I just bought this for my class. 3mo

This was an absolute delight! Middle grade with Rick Riordan and Harry Potter vibes. Compelling and charming with some swashbuckling thrown in, it was hard to put down and I completely understand why Barnes &Noble named it their book of the year. This was my #Bookspin book and I loved every minute!

Good potential but this one felt rushed. Pacing and storyline got really choppy halfway through and the main characters lacked depth. Some important characters are removed from the story when the author doesn‘t have time for them. If there are already planned sequels why the rush?

Kboltz I think it is perfectly written for 10 and up which allows them to enjoy fantasy at their level. These are the series that teachers/parents need for kids to read. 3mo

The reader is dropped in to a new land with magical creatures. Some are explained but many are not described at all. The tale drug on a bit and by the time it got to the best bits, I was ready to be done.
