Krakauer was on an assignment to Mt Everest, to write an article for Outdoor Magazine. He joined a guide led by Rob Hall. A mix of weather, inexperience among climbers in the group, poor decisions and a lack of communication, mostly due to lack of oxygen, the trek became fatal.
Date nite to Royal Spice, a local Nepalese/Indian restaurant. I had Newari Khaja with goat, naan, and Nepalese rice pudding. #FoodandLit

A collection of short stories. Each story centered around a character's passion - friendship, lust, a mother's love - and multiply the passion tenfold in the larger context. I was highly engaged and couldn't wait to start the next story. #FoodandLit #LitsyAtoZ@Texreader @Catsandbooks

Yay! A quote about food for #foodandlit and perfect for Valentine‘s Day with a little romance. #Nepal

This is a terrible audiobook (the narrator is quite good though) so I‘ve moved to the ebook. The book bounces around between countless characters and through time and seemingly at random. I was in a constant state of confusion. Reading the ebook is so much better.

Hooked_on_books That‘s really smart of the Norwegians. I‘m glad they‘re compensating the workers really well. 2d

Mehso-so

This book was ok bordering a thumbs down for me. While there are many important issues touched on, none are fleshed out. International aid, gender inequality, human trafficking, and classes are just a few that come up - but only on the surface. The story could have focused on fewer issues and gone deeper into those. Too many characters and the stories feel disjointed - although they did tie together in the last few chapters.

I am rather on the fence re these short stories: I didn't hate them but I thought they lacked psychological insight/depth and also, they were relentlessly showing people's worst sides, which is not what I want to read right now. Still, I learnt a lot about life in Nepal.

Let‘s be clear, this is not a horror story. It‘s a thriller. Try climbing the world‘s highest mountain when you are being chased by killers. Jake Perry writes his memoir about his epic climb in 1924. It reads like nonfiction as he goes through the details of planning for the climb, and the narrator is perfect for this task. But the “thrilling” part of the book starts about halfway through it when gruesome murders start happening. I found the ⬇️

Texreader detail very interesting, as I do with nonfiction books when told and narrated well as here. To me, there were only a couple of heart-stopping moments in the book and that‘s ok. There‘s several mysteries going on as well, with a young American Jake not understanding the bigger picture of the years between the Great War and whatever was going to happen next, until he lives through WWII. If this book is indicative of Simmons‘ books, I‘ll read more. 5d
Texreader #foodandlit #Nepal (only mentioned occasionally) @Catsandbooks I couldn‘t resist adding little audiobook guy climbing the mountain!! (edited) 5d
