Do yall read the novellas or short stories from a series as well? I do or at least the ones I can find. Though most are just not as good for some reason.

The New Directions Storybook editions are a great way to sample authors that you have been meaning to try. This was the case for me with Ginzburg's Road to the City ( a 90 page novella in this edition). I was a bit sceptical at first as Ginzburg tends to move from character to character frequently. One aspect I was sold on immediately was the atmosphere, perfect for the warm evening in which I enjoyed it. Despite the grim atmosphere of the (CONT)

vivastory story, desperate situations & an existential tone, by the end I was a firm believer. My god, what an unremitting bleak tale. (edited) 7d
LeahBergen Great review! I‘m intrigued. 7d
vivastory @LeahBergen Thanks! I picked up another Ginzburg literally as soon as I finished it. 6d

My Europa journey continues! This jumped into my cart when placing an order on Abe Books. Each story is about finding happiness is an unexpected way. While that may sound twee, it really wasn‘t as the stories are themselves not always happy. A fast and enjoyable read and I‘m loving Carousel of Desire by the same author up my TBR list! #europacollective

Different Seasons | Stephen King
post image

#TLT Thanks for the tag @dabbe
All three of my favorite novellas are in one book - Different Seasons has Rita Hayworth (The Shawshank Redemption), The Body (Stand by Me) and The Apt Pupil in it. I am generally not a fan of short stories but this book was a 1982 standout. I wore it out and bought a used copy last summer to read them all again. Stephen King is synonymous with childhood and shaped the 6th grade reader in me.

Bklover Wow- we did make similar pics. I forgot about Apt Pupil! I agree- I love going g back and reading the novellas and short stories. LOVED Different Seasons! 1mo
Reggie I read these 3 for the first time this past winter and totally agree. Standouts. 1mo

dabbe I can't believe I haven't read any of these--more on the TBR! Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 1mo
julieclair @dabbe This was a really good question. It made me think about books I enjoyed that are outside my normal "go to" genres. 4w
dabbe @julieclair Yay! Plus I'm creating a killer reading list to be shared with all soon! 🤩😃😍 4w

1. “The Lottery“ by Shirley Jackson. I first read this in high school, and it has been my favorite short story ever since.
2. OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie ... 'nuff said.
3. A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens because “God bless us, everyone!“

All are welcome to share; I'd love to read what your choices are! Tagging a few below.

lil1inblue I need to re-read “The Lottery.“ We read it in 8th grade (or maybe 7th? I had the same English teacher both years), but I don't remember it at all. Thanks for the tag! 1mo
CBee O Caledonia is a recent novella I read and it‘s an all time favorite for sure 👏🏻 1mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I admit, I've never read the story, but I did catch a made for TV movie with Keri Russell & Dan Cortese in the 1990s, and it disturbed me. In a good way! 😁 Thanks for the tag! I'm not having the best month, and I've been berserkedly busy, so I thank you for reminding me to check in & think about books for a few minutes. 1mo

DebinHawaii I love The Lottery too! If you‘ve not read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by her as well, I recommend it! 1mo
EadieB @dabbe I don‘t really read any short stories but I have read The Lottery in 7th grade. 1mo
EadieB @DebinHawaii I‘ve read that one too! 1mo
tpixie @dabbe I loved the lottery in high school and it continues to haunt me. I agree with @DebinHawaii re we have always lived in the castle. Haunting on Hill Street is also interesting with the ??? Netflix movie as a companion piece- which is not just a remake of the book, but an interesting interpretation/ story adjacent movie 1mo
tpixie @dabbe thanks for the tag. I really typically don‘t read short stories or Novella‘s but I did just read my first Flannery O‘Connor. That was weird. 1mo
DebinHawaii @EadieB @tpixie @dabbe Yes! The Haunting of Hill House is good too. Jackson writes great creepy stories/novellas. (I need to watch the Netflix mini series still!) 1mo
dabbe @DebinHawaii I read that a couple of years ago and loved it. Now that I think about it, I should have chosen THE HAUNTING as a favorite novella, too! It's my fave Halloween-ey story! 🖤🤩🖤 1mo
dabbe @EadieB It still haunts me 40+ years later! 🤩 1mo
dabbe @tpixie Her stories are kind of weird, aren't they? Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 1mo
AnnCrystal Thanks for the tag 😉👍! I'm going to weigh this one for a bit. Love short stories. (edited) 1mo
dabbe @AnnCrystal 🤩🤗😃 1mo
tpixie @DebinHawaii @dabbe the movie was scary for me but I thought it was great and loved the interpretation. It‘s an ‘ inspired by‘ movie and not a remaking. If you don‘t remember the characters names and who they are in the book, you might review that because that‘s kind of fun. ( I thought) 1mo
dabbe @tpixie I'll definitely have to look into it. Thanks for sharing! 💚💙💚 1mo
tpixie @dabbe 🥰 1mo
Bklover Thanks for the tag, my friend!💙 1mo
rwmg My mind always goes blank with these things, but:

1) The Lottery, which was in a collection of short stories we read at school. It had quite an impact as it's the only one I remember
2) Nightfall by Isaac Asimov
3) The Dowry of Angyar (aka Semley's Necklace) by Ursula K. Le Guin.
1mo
dabbe @Bklover 😘 1mo
dabbe @rwmg You've added more to my TBR! Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 1mo
Lynnsoprano Thanks for the tag ❤️😘 4w
Crazeedi I normally don't read short stories or novellas! I want a book with 300 plus pages mostly! 4w
dabbe @Crazeedi No problem. You like to be completely invested in the books you read! 🤩😍😃 4w
Crazeedi @dabbe I sometimes think I should expand my reading , then I look at the multitudes of books stacked around my house... 4w
dabbe @Crazeedi ... same here. 🤩 4w
