American Pastoral | Philip Roth

Today, I decided to nip into a favourite café for lunch - fortunately my favourite spot to sit was free. Deadlines loom, but I‘m spending a few extra moments to catch up on my book club read (American Pastoral) and finishing the last few sips of my Lavender and Mountain Berry iced tea.

Emilymdxn This is such a lovely way to spend a day, so aesthetic 💖💖💖 5y
catebutler @Emilymdxn Thank you Emily! I always love when I can sneak in a chapter or two whilst on a lunch break. 📖☕️ 5y
BookBabe I read this novel...it kind of left me reeling. How did you feel about it? 5y
catebutler @BookBabe I agree! I still haven‘t determined what I think about this novel. My book group decided it was a worthy read, but we did think the theme was quite heavy and depressing. I marked quite a bit throughout and found myself pondering well after I read, which points to a good book. I do think I‘ll continue with the trilogy, how about you? 5y

“Stop worrying about growing old. And think about growing up.” ― Philip Roth. #RIP -- and thank you. All of us who read and wonder will miss you. (I could have chosen from a lot of Roth in my library, but somehow this title seemed perfect for an image this morning.) #PhilipRoth

Portnoy's Complaint | Philip Roth

Some of Roth's novels have been on my TBR for quite some time and I have yet to take the plunge. I've heard that his works can be separated with a butter knife, in terms of style and literary impact but is that such an uncommon thing to see from 20th century writers who had long tenures? I always enjoy seeing how an author's writing changes as they do, and as time and history progresses.

Incredible. Depressing. Real. This is a dead man's tale. An unhealthy old man is filled with regret and sorrow over his past while struggling (resentfully) to cope with serious hereditary physical ailments. I don't know how one could read this book and not ponder his or her own mortality. Roth is truly an American literary god. #philiproth #litsyatoz

I'm finishing up Portnoy's Complaint. I often enjoyed and understood the reason for the chaotic rambling, but I would have liked to have had something else to hold on to. Perhaps the problem is that I read American Pastoral first and enjoyed it so much. #PhilipRoth

While Roth's prose and characterization are certainly engaging, what this book amounts to is a 300-page inside joke about being a thirteen-year-old Jewish boy, and if you don't happen to fit into that category, too bad, because there's no narrative thread to follow if the joke doesn't include you. Let's just say it's masturbatory in more ways than one. #review #portnoyscomplaint #philiproth
