But then I cracked this open to find that the book I remembered from my childhood as so beautiful and moving actually features horrible moments of disgraceful racism. Can I ever say again that I "love" this book? Probably not. #problematic

While the ever #problematic Ender's Game is my favorite book, this is my #favorite book-as-object.
I owe the Rankin/Bass animated Hobbit my love of fantasy. I watched it so many times as a kid, and when I saw this beauty at Edward McKay's Used Books and More I NEEDED it, precious.

pickFinished this one today with my morning tutoring group. Focused on the way Omri's stereotypes are challenged by what he learns about Little Bear and Boone, and Omri's growing realization that they are people, not toys. Rather #problematic that Little Bear is essentially rewarded with a woman at the end though.
so-soOof. This book is a tough one to review.
A compulsively readable M/M romance with lovable protagonists.
That being said, it gets tricky here when examining some of the aspects of the internalized homophobia expressed here, because if the bio of the author is believed she's a straight cis woman, which begs the question: Do the characters' struggles feel authentic or do they perpetuate stereotypes?

pickI enjoyed this book. Being an English Lit major-turned-food industry person myself, I related to the main character. The ending was mildly #problematic though. I'm hoping the future books in the series don't follow that trend. Otherwise, this book is cozy AF.
