The Secret Garden | Frances Hodgson Burnett

"It's the perfect weather for The Secret Garden!", thought I, as I've been busy planning my own garden. But then I cracked this open to find that the book I remembered from my childhood as so beautiful and moving actually features horrible moments of disgraceful racism. Can I ever say again that I "love" this book? Probably not. #problematic

My Sweet Audrina | V.C. Andrews

On last week's episode of the My Favorite Murder podcast, Karen and Georgia announced that they'd be doing a book club episode on My Sweet Audrina. Obviously I had to listen to the audiobook. Holy problematic! This is my first time reading it and my goodness does it need an update. Can't wait to hear what they say about it on MFM #murderino #problematic

Laura317 Good advice! 😂😂😂 7y
MidnightBookGirl I read this back in junior high or high school, and at the time I loved the gothic feel to it (although I hated the ending). I'll admit, 40 year old me is horrified that I read this as a kid! 7y
Chocamanda @MidnightBookGirl if I read this as a teen, all of my middle-child triggers would have been set off! I'm sure I would have thought that I related to Audrina way more than I actually did. I'm glad I read it as an adult. 7y

While the ever #problematic Ender's Game is my favorite book, this is my #favorite book-as-object.

I owe the Rankin/Bass animated Hobbit my love of fantasy. I watched it so many times as a kid, and when I saw this beauty at Edward McKay's Used Books and More I NEEDED it, precious.

It's the complete text with 230 illustrations from the planning stages of the film. It is massive and GORGEOUS. #springflingreading

CrowCAH Awesome!!! 😍 8y
Gezemice I love Ender's Game, too. I don't think it is problematic, it is genius. 8y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Gezemice Oh no, the book is complete genius, the problem is that the author is a jerk. 8y
Gezemice @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I know but I think people should be able to enjoy the work apart from what the author says. I have read those a long time ago and loved them, not going to start hating them because his views are not up to mainstream. I don't agree with what he says. But the books themselves are actually a huge statement for acceptance of differences. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Gezemice Oh, I still very much love the books. I could never hate them. The first means more to me personally than any book I've ever read. And the whole series literally revolves around the theme of understanding the other as the ultimate solution. It just bums me out that the author is a jerk. It is problematic for me, is all. (edited) 8y
Gezemice @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yeah, it is ironic that he can envision understanding of something completely alien yet cannot do it for something only slightly different right where he is. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Gezemice Well said. Plus I've read interviews where he's been really shockingly rude to people and he spoke at my brother's college and a lot of the audience got upset because he was arrogant about his own work and dismissive of their questions. I'm not just calling him a jerk because of his beliefs. 8y
Gezemice @TobeyTheScavengerMonk His style is so highly intellectual and often missing emotions. I am not surprised his social skills are lacking. Maybe one of the people with no filters, too much honesty. 8y

#springflingreading I first checked Ender's Game out of the library, then bought a copy and read it until it came apart, then bought this copy and read it until it is also #fallingapart I've got a nice hardcover on my shelf, and I keep this copy in the drawer of my nightstand.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Disclaimer: The author of this book is a tool bag. It's still my favorite. #problematic 8y
Shvonne Is it okay to duct tape a book? 8y
HLouiseM Your disclaimer made my day. Completely agree. 8y

Pickpick

Finished this one today with my morning tutoring group. Focused on the way Omri's stereotypes are challenged by what he learns about Little Bear and Boone, and Omri's growing realization that they are people, not toys. Rather #problematic that Little Bear is essentially rewarded with a woman at the end though.

EvieBee I loved this book as a young person. I should probably revisit. Your discussion topics sounds so deep. 8y
josie281 I need to reread. I enjoyed this and reread it a lot in my youth. 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @EvieBee84 @josie281 It was my first reread since I was a kid and it really holds up! 8y

Mehso-so

Oof. This book is a tough one to review.
A compulsively readable M/M romance with lovable protagonists.
That being said, it gets tricky here when examining some of the aspects of the internalized homophobia expressed here, because if the bio of the author is believed she's a straight cis woman, which begs the question: Do the characters' struggles feel authentic or do they perpetuate stereotypes?

#queer #queerromance #problematic #4thbookof2017

Megabooks I've noticed there are a lot of straight cis women writing gay male romance. 8y
Amris It's very common! I have heard anecdotely of male authors of M/M romance that use female pseudonyms for anonymity, but I couldn't give you an example. 8y

I enjoyed this book. Being an English Lit major-turned-food industry person myself, I related to the main character. The ending was mildly #problematic though. I'm hoping the future books in the series don't follow that trend. Otherwise, this book is cozy AF.
